Obviously you want to go as hard in on attack as you can. Higher attack means fewer hits to finish a battle, means faster progress, means higher efficiency.

The only time you ever want to give half a fuck about defence is when a game has the ability to face later game enemies earlier on if you have the ability to beat them. Then you may need defence to win such a battle, which would then leapfrog ahead your strength, further increasing your efficiency.
