Early launch isn't happening, as amazing as it would be. Not every retail outlet even has the games yet, and synchronizing releases between Retail and Digital is what keeps goodwill with the retail stores.

They only put up the opening video because it's already been leaked, and there's no reason the official sonic channel shouldn't be getting the revenue everyone else should be getting

I'd love for the game to be released early but I can't imagine that would be what the announcement is. Aaron Webber and his PR team might be savvy enough to know that that would be the cool thing to do in the advent of the leaks but the people actually in charge of those decisions certainly aren't. Even if they were willing to do it, they need to talk with their partners at Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and Steam to get the game pushed forwards along with clearing it with their retail partners (brick and mortar stores detest digital version having any kind of edge over physical copies).

SEGA and Sonic Team have shown time and time again that they have literally no understanding of what made Sonic work in the first place. Hence why now they need to rely on Taxman and Stealth, people who actually do understand why the original Sonic games were good. Mania looks (effectively, if not literally) flawless compared to the last twenty years of Sonic.
The last Sonic game that looked like it had real passion behind it was fucking Unleashed, and before that, SA1 (as rough as that game is). Generations is good, but it lacks the sheer "we really wanted to make this" feeling that Unleashed had.
Mania is a real passion project, and that's what Sonic needs.

Mystic Cave would be alright, but Oil Ocean is more unique and interesting a choice, and the main thing that ever held it back was the poor level design compared with other zones, which will not be a problem in Mania.
