Is the game actually playable yet? I mean, what sort of challenge and sense of progression does it offer nowadays? Is it fun? If I play it now, it's going to be a shallow one note experience that I'll already be bored of by the time other interesting features get added. Well what happens in almost all cases is that a game will peak at some subjective point of time and then it will become worse with updates. For me this happened in Minecraft 1.7. I can't tell you which 1.7 because apparently there have been three or four 1.7s but it was definitely before hunger.
You really have to roll the dice on early access but I think a good practice is to only buy an early access game if you'd be content with it never receiving another update. Or you can just pirate it because in the olden days they would be the ones giving you money to test their unfinished product and/or be part of their focus group. If you play it early you probably will get tired of it and miss out a couple cool updates but that's just a natural weakness of early access. It's a system nobody asked for but kind of just appeared in the wild so obviously it's not going to be perfect.
