LOW POLY GAMES

So tired of the retro "8-16 bit" bullshit aesthetic... anyone have any low-poly / high-res(or even low res) recommendations?

Some examples: Wizardry 8, Die By the Sword, EverQuest, early ps/ps2 games...

When will we start to get some new games made in this style? Soldier of Fortune characters / low-poly character faces just get my almonds activating.

Low-poly graphics always seem to be spooky even when they're not trying to be and I fuckin love it. Die By the Sword was such a hidden gem. Pretty sure I played it for the first time cause my friend got it at a flea market or something.

I guess not a lot of people feel the same way toward the whole "low poly" vibe. The normies eat up that 8-bit shit, that's why it's all over steam and indie games now a days. Not to say there aren't good games with that artstyle but it is getting out of hand.

Low-poly RTS/Character Creation/Character Skins are GOD TIER cozy to me. Up-close ugly ass faces are so perfect. I feel like customizing characters back then with obvious varying pre-made facial skins make characters way more diverse than they are now, and fucking MMOs these days make the races look all the fucking same.

Everquest had fatass ogres, small ass gnomes and cool skinned humanoids, and even lizardmen.. Now you have Regular Humanoid(and 3 variations that look almost identical), big humanoid and small humanoid. Woooooooooow

The textures are actually pretty low res, but they make it work so well. It looks more like 32-bit spritework than what we see in most textures in 3D games

My guess is that it's harder to make. 8-bit stuff is relatively easy to make, at least in comparison with 3D stuff. Also, these were artists who knew what they were doing and trying to do their best within their limitations. Nowadays you have to actively cripple yourself to make this style.
I fucking love it and I hope that the 90's generation is now old enough to bring this style back in some interesting capacity, but the idea remains that they could just make better looking stuff.

However, you can make low-poly stuff look very pretty with high-res textures, at least imo. I can't put my finger on what makes it just look so distinct and just "better" than just rounded faces with slight differences than other characters cause you made the nose a little longer and the mouth wider

You can, but these sort of low-res low-poly 3D managed a lot of creepiness, which I think higher textures have a bit more difficulty in doing, since it doesn't leave as much to the imagination.

Yeah I think it comes down to personality and looking unnatural. Like all the Quake monsters and stuff, they were all abominations and didnt look just like scary humanoids.

The gross, ugly textures just adds to the creepiness and those pre-made faces have personality that sticks in your head.

A good comparison is the original System Shock and the newer remake. The enemies just don't look as threatening because they're well animated and you can see every detail. It loses the unnerving movement, certain details that were mostly blobs that made you add the detail in your head.

It's a shame that stuff like Max Payne's face is no longer a thing or those just normal npc's with devs faces. It also gave the game a better feeling of genuine passion and love when you could tell the devs were having fun while making the games.
System Shock 2 enemies still creep me out. The audio helps but those static pained faces really added.

Honestly, no. I only played System Shock 2 a couple of years ago, despite remembering seeing it come out when I was younger.
That game has creeped me out more than any other game. Possibly aside from the 4 silent hills.

Well, I'm sure time has a factor in it, but I still prefer the look to this day. I didn't play Hexen or Soul Reaver until a couple years ago and those games stand out so much more than all the "fleshed out, aaa graphics engines" games

It helps that Max Payne is a good game but yeah, it's hard to say the why exactly. It looks silly, it's funny when mixed with the hard boiled stuff, but god damn, it gave it so much more personality.

Maybe they went a bit too far in the low res aspect but I like it. It is a tough balance to achieve when you could very easily make it look a thousand times better but still fight to get that particular look.
I hope those spinning shotgun reloads are as satisfying to use as they are from the video.

it's because someone had to hand make the old graphics, transposing what the artist imagined into the limit poly count. because all the detail couldn't be put into a texture file the artist would make the heads slight odd shapes, exaggerate proportions to signify something they couldn't put into the texture.

and if the artist DIDNT make this effort to cram a low poly texture with IDEAs it would look horse shit.

whereas now, you use your 3d scan tools to get a "actors" likeness, use auto texture tool, use a mocap tool instead of animating character quirks.
there's no need to think about the product youre making anymore.
darksouls make an effort to add character to its world like old games used to, and the players go batshit for it. but it's still going to be a rarity that devs are going to make that effort when its so easy to just use the automation tools they have.
