Yeah, the ending was disappointing, but I prefer it to another hamfisted attempt to fantasy or gothic horror. The game does not have the scope to build a world like Blooborne or Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the earth, so at least they landed it in something more intimate.

I mean, I'm not asking for a big ending where elder gods break through into our world. They didn't even need a twist ending, they literally could have just had the player rescue Ethan from his crazed family and it would have been more satisfying than what they went with. And it would have left things open for a larger sequel where they could expand on the idea of fictional places being made real by contact with eldritch horrors.

Instead, they decided at the end to completely destroy all the horror atmosphere in favor of shitty, cliched family drama. It was essentially Gone Home all over again but more misleading.

So there's this sign they post down in the ocean. It's got Death on it, as in the Grim Reaper. They post it outside deep underwater caves, and it basically says "You WILL die down here. Nothing down here is worth you dying." Divers go down in those caves, get turned around in the pitch black, don't know which way is up, and run out of air.

The knowledge that there are bodies on Earth nobody will ever retrieve. And there are even ones that people can see, like the hikers on Everest, but are too dangerous to retrieve. There's this one dead body on Everest that people actually use as a marker. Guy in green or something.

That kind of shit scares me to death.

It wasn't that bad, just repetitive. The battle system could have felt better if there was more enemy variety, and certainly the dollmaker section felt like a pain because it was obviously stretched fr content. I actually feel that they did a good job making it a 3D platforming with gliding and stuff, which is normally hard to do in games. The cards in the sky section was impressive to me because I never felt like I couldn't tell how far something was.

I don't know that is ever explained, but the whole sealing the Darkwraiths is magic stuff, so maybe the water just appear. What's creepy to me is that i the flooding supposedly happen hundreds of years ago, but there are so many corpses that not all of them are fully decomposed yet. At the bottom of it there is a miasma of bones and flesh. You are basically traveling in a dark soup of rotten corpses., and the Darkwraiths have been living there, alive but immobile for hundreds of years, buried between bodies.

Yep, I'm getting real sick of pointless twists that come in at the last moment because the devs think that'll make the game memorable for people. A twist needs to be earned, through careful foreshadowing and obfuscation. I'm not just talking spooky games though, this is true of all games, not everything needs to have a twist, no one's going to judge your game poorly for having a simple, but satisfying ending.

Most of people who experience it "see" distorted versions of their own room (or place they've fallen asleep) because their brain sends signals similar to those of waking up, so they imagine seeing place they've fallen asleep in. The hallucinations are inflicted by feelings of fear caused by partial awareness that your muscles are inhibited, but you can sorta fight that off as long as you are aware that this is not happening.

It's just like coping with your own, standard nightmares and learning to elevate them into lucid dreams.

You might have been experiencing something rather different than sleep paralysis, like a DREAM that roughly correspons to them (happens to people who read about them a lot). In that case, sure: it's all a dream proper, and the hypervigilante systems aren't kicking in.

However, the proper sleep paralysis is a NASTY experience that you don't get over by applying rationality. It's not even possible.

The situation is that your sensors are hyper-active and pick up everything, and all of that date completely skips higher processing centers: no - all the audio, visual and internal communication is fed DIRECTLY to amigdala and limbic system. And that is the part of your brain just considers your higher cognition to be an incompetent asshole and does not actually ask your rationality ANYTHING.

The experience of dread and threat people experience in sleep paralysis are intense, irrational and absolutely mortifying.

Saying that you can cope with that by just realizing what is going on is like saying you can cure an arachnophobic by simply explaining to him that the spider isn't really dangerous.

It does FUCK. ALL. In sleep paralysis, your most paranoid part of brain takes full control and there is fuck all your higher rational functions can do about it.

It's a terrifying, deeply terrifying experience that can leave pretty remarkable scars on people, actually.

If we speak of dreams, what do you call the sensation where you are sort of between wakefulness and an ongoing dream, and those two "realities" sort of blur together? Because that happened to me this morning and it was weird as fuck.
I was half awake, and utterly convinced that I had gotten blackout drunk, expelled from school, had dated a snake girl, and done other utterly insane shenanigans that I don't even recall that well anymore, while at the same time, part of my mind was telling me "no, those were dreams you moron, wake up already" (or that at least, was a sensation I recall from it). It took me like 2 hours to fully wake up and get out of my bed. It wasn't like the usual, "snap, you are awake" or even the slower, groggy awakening. It took super fucking long and it was confusing as hell.

Seems you are a lucky one (sleeping environment seems to play major role in this, as the halucinations and the pathological emotional stances are products of the heightened awareness of your sense).

I had like five or six of them myself, and while it was possible to manage them, every single one was a painful experience, the kind of thing you know they will have to pay you extra to force you to go through again.
More importantly, I interviewed or read reports of another maybe fifty cases. All largely the same story.
Working in sleep-lab is fun.
I also used to experience dreams very similar to sleep paralysis, but those were always just me, my brain making the whole thing up, probably based on what I've read about sleep paralysis. Those were incomparably more manageable.
Lastly, and this was the only thing I did not experience while being monitored, I had strong audio halucinations while I was falling a sleep. Sometimes when I was waking up.
I think it was related to one of the two drugs I was taking, most likely Welbutrin.
It was every night and it was weird, but never scary after the first time and after being assured that it's completely normal.

Still, it was like if there was a book club happening around my head every time I went to sleep.

And yes, we use a polysomnogram for brain monitoring, mainly. Few labs use MMRI, actually, but we could not afford something like that. And it hits with a whole load of problems.

They also monitor everything else - heart-beat, temperature, those damn sweat-measuring things that monitor muscle activity (forgot the english name for it).

And that is just about it. They hook you up to all of that, then they let you go to sleep. And then they torture you by waking you up via intercom, sometimes forcing you to recall the dream they just woke you up from, and sometimes forcing you NOT to sleep for another few hours.

About every third or fourth night of this, I ended up in a sleep paralysis.

In the morning, they let you shower and send you off home with some homeworks to do (like: don't sleep the whole next day). You come in back in the evening, and shit goes on repeat.

They beated me to it, but Hypnagogia is the common term for this state. It's also what some people also sometimes mistake for sleep paralysis.
Some meds, like the Stillnox I just took a while ago, can greatly increase the experience of this state and it's absolutely gorgeous. If that shit wasn't both addictive as fuck and losing effectiveness over time, I'd be eating them like a candy. I love that state of mind.

The auditory halucinations I used to have when I was taking other meds (I think it was Welbutrin, but it might have been the Mitrazin too...) seemed to induce it too.
