06's story is shit because of the the whole "save the princess" cliche plus the infamous kiss scene.
Mephiles only had two small issues, one aesthetical for being literally a Shadow clone and the other for being edgy enough to kill Sonic for real in what's supposed to be a kid-friendly game.
in terms of plot he's difinitely not such an amazing character but he isn't a steaming pile of shit either, he's just an average villain

Honestly I think Classic Sonic might end up being the worst recieved of the gameplay styles. It'll inevitably get compared to Mania and come up short, it doesn't look like it's been improved at all since Generations, in fact I think it looks a bit worse. Also it made sense for him to be in Generations but he feels out of place here, it's pretty blatant that they only put him in because Generations did well.
