What happened to the RTS genre? It's basically dead, and even interest in Starcraft II is already on life support.
People realized the genre itself was shit and moved onto the superior MOBA genre.
It's worthless saying the genre is dead without looking at what people play. There's still people playing everything from Blitzkrieg to the entire Dawn of War series. Online multiplayer may not be as popular but I don't think that's a good indication of a genres death.
People are still playing AoE 2.

Your shitty MOBA genre is also dying
Strategy as a whole is dying, and most of the RTS players have moved on to grand strategy games or MOBAs
RTS games are often fucking difficult and require you to spend a lot of time learning how to play before you stand a chance against other people.
I guess fewer people are willing to put the time in these days.
The genre isn't dead, it's just that the latest RTS games have been garbage so there's nothing fresh to play and people are sticking to the classics.

Has the genre been perfected to the point where trying to add new ideas just makes the games worse, or is it just shitty developers though?

Uhm....okay OP. Please put a trigger warning on your thread before posting, okay?!?!?
Posting the WTC put me in shock because of that event that happened before I was born.

people are still playing aoe3
the entire genre died rather abruptly roughly when consoles became big in the seventh generation, since they're basically impossible to make for a controller they couldn't be put on consoles, and thus nobody wanted to fund them when they could fund a more profitable console game instead

I still haven't played that, once I get bored of 2 I'll take a look at it though.
For me personally they went to wacky/relied on cooldowns or micromanaging/went to super high tech future robot alien settings
I want a Red Alert 1 remaster, that's all.
