- Skinner box syndrome, Blizzard are not complete idiot and they clearly know how to trigger the addiction in the players. Lootboxes, littles sparks on the screen, everything is there.
- Limiters on the characters means even if you are mechanically extremely good at FPS, you can't do more than the hero you play allow. Meaning once you have mastered an hero, you can only get better by doing teamwork and ulting at the right time.
- As a consequence, people who don't usually like FPS like this game, because you can do a lot of stuff by the press of a button.
- The ranked mode and lootboxes are making people addicted.
- Colorful and very well done character design appealing to a variety of players.

The problem is that I can go into the game right now and my experience will not differ much from my experience a year ago. I "might" get assigned one of the 3 new maps or play one of the 4 new heroes but that's it. Where it does differ, however, is that now half the heroes are unplayable and every 2nd player you see will be wearing a halloween costume or a swimsuit. In theory the other weapons are side grades, rather than straight upgrades. So, better at one thing, but worse at another.

In reality the default loadout is probably the best in most cases, but there are some weapons which are notably more useful than their stock alternative.
A lot of the alternate weapons are simply garbage to the point of not even being worth using.

You can get the other weapons from either:
Achievement milestones (3 for each class, and the weapon you get is set)
Random drop whilst playing
Trading with another player
Buying from the store
Crafting with spare weapons from random drops.


You used to be able to get them from boxes, but nowadays the only things you get from them are cosmetics and "strange" weapons, which are basically versions of the weapon that count your kills. You can also buy and sell those on the steam market.

Honestly, I am surprised they haven't changed the system yet so everyone has every weapon, and the crate/crafting system revolves around stranges, killstreak and unusuals.
