Zelda actually has a story and a reason to timeskip. Mario has nothing story-wise in main series titles. There would be no need for there to be a timeskip unless it was in one of the RPG's where there is a story.

And if you gave over Mario gets married to Brenda or whatever. He's in a tux and everything. Bowser's only helping because nobody deserves to be married to her, not even Mario. He's big, slow, and powerful, and always has fire. Junior wants to go an adventure, and is small, quick, shoots weaker and slower fire, as dies in 1 hit.
