It's not surprising everyone wants a piece of the online CCG pie now. As it turns out making a couple dozen cards every few months is way less effort than creating ASSFAGGOT heroes, maps, or actual new games. The only genre I can think of that requires even less effort are gacha mobage but those are more skinnerboxes than games. Fucking Team 5 was like a dozen people back when HS was greenlit and it's not like they needed to grow that much outside of hiring more people to localize (which they probably don't).

This isn't how Valve works, the reality is even more infuriating.

>"Hi welcome to Valveâ„¢ we'll never tell you what to do and you're free to work on whatever your heart tells you to. Might I reccomend working on the underappreciated TF2, or perhaps a new entry in our Left 4 Dead series?"
>"Nah, I'm good. I think I'm going to jerk off and make VR tech demos that will never be commercial products/dumb-ass micro games that literally no one wants because they're easy and fun for me to work on."

Valve is the way it is because their initially awesome sounding hippy-dippy work culture means people there have no incentive to work on something challenging/difficult.
>>
>>386721984
Ayyy they were the developers for the first game.
>>
Okay but why are people mad. Like... if you don't like it, don't play it, you know? Or are you guys seriously gonna pull the SJW angle and be all like
>well i don't like it so no one else should be allowed to play it
Please just... grow up
>>
>>386722793

>>
>>386722793
>Hi welcome to Valveâ„¢ we'll never tell you what to do and you're free to work on whatever your heart tells you to.

it amazes me that people think valve functions this way because of some vague information disseminated on the internet years ago

yes, they have no direction, no team leads and nodobdy ever tells anybody what to do. right.
>>
>>386722793
>thinks coding for tf2 is harder than other game
ok kid. People choose the projects they're interested in. Nobody is interested in tf2. It's old news, and they probably aren't going to stay with valve forever. Realistically that means you want to be on new, interesting and innovative projects. Successful ones too. fixing bugs for a 10 year old game is not on anyone's short list of things they'd like to do.
>>
>>386722859
I know you're shitposting but Valve hasn't made a singleplayer game in 6 years now.
>>
>>386722793
Yeah their business model is starting to fuck them over. It works really well, so long as you ensure that you're only hiring driven and passionate employees, but they don't do that. They'red hiring people who are "self-starters" and "have ideas", but they aren't actually doing that. Valve is probably the end goal for a lot of lazy developers, because your job description is that you don't have to do anything at all. Hence why everyone is leaving valve: without direction you lose your drive and passion.
>>
>>386722865
Ok explain why they just abandon projects and only have 5 developers on TF2 and updates for all their games are scarce. How do they release almost no content and the last major update to Steam was 7 years ago.
>>
You can work on anything as long as they follow market trends.

Or they're just going a direction that is different than what they want. Vale cares about maximum monetization. People who want to make single player games aren't going to fit in at Valve because you can't really monetize them.

I don't see what's so hard to believe about it. I worked in similar places. Basically, if you have an idea, and need help you "pitch" it to everyone else. If they see the merit maybe they help you. Alternatively, there is a sorta "scratch my back I'll scratch yours when the time comes" stuff that happens all the time.

>>386723083
Yes, a major update would streamline clicks through better organizations of features. They are constantly releasing beta features like streaming that get abandoned. The platform lacks the ability to personalize it based on the wants of the users. The interface is dated, the platform has buried functionality that some people don't even know exist.

>>386722935
You're arguing about things I never said? In fact you're proving my point. TF2 is nowhere close to dead, and the only reason it's perceived as dying is because Valve got bored with it. The devs ditched a rabid, fanatical playerbase and a game with a ton of potential growth because "LOL WE'RE BORED WITH IT XD." TF2 is literally the biggest indictment of their dev system.

It was all a fluke. Half-Life was the pinnacle of game design. Everything after was just bandwagon hopping. Eventually they figured out first how to print money with Steam. They do not put effort into anything anymore, they only buy people who do, like with Portal. It's not a gamedev company, it's an investment fund.

Not even the guy you're responding too, but Steam has been broken for fucking years now. Clicking a website link that opens the website in the Steam window will frequently break every tab except for Library, Steam just not starting properly and needing the task ended to be able to restart it isn't an uncommon issue, trying to run videos from workshop pages completely freezes up the programs half the time and the download servers haven't gotten any faster in about 4-5 years despite games getting bigger. I'm sure there's other stuff I'm forgetting, but Steam really need an overhaul.

>>386723705
To bad they've done that once since 2008, and it was a completely different genre compared to everything else they make.
>>
I blame all the people who bought hats, it's YOUR fault Valve is like this now. YOU encouraged them to only make cosmetics.
>>
>>386723554
You said that people were afraid of working on something difficult/challenging. That is how I perceived your wording. There is nothing difficult about coding for TF2 than there is for coding other games. I guess you could call not getting bored with the game a challenge.

Well, keep crying. TF2 is just another shooting game to many people, Valve included. It doesn't particularly revolutionize anything and its monetization scheme isn't quite as profitable as the other ones they've come up with. It's not dead yet but its on a downturn. Nobody wants to work on it.

The point of making it cost money is to discourage cheaters which actually worked. Of course that is only representative of the competitive mode which isn't worth playing over lobbies like tf2center or pugchamp. There was a free option available and besides, spending any money at all gives you that pass so isn't representable as paying for a service
>>
>>386726439
All people ever wanted was for these faggots to finish the stories they started. You know, like they said they were going to do over ten years ago. Valve is also at fault for perpetuating the "will we/wont we" shit about their third installments by not putting their foot down and giving anyone a real fucking answer. They've purposefully been stringing fans along for years and then when they finally release something, it's a shitty clone of other games that are currently over saturating the market.

How is it entitled for people to get pissed and hold these asshole accountable for their obvious fucking bait and switch?

Nobody was asking for this gay fucking card game. Everyone who buys Valve's products and gave them money wanted to see an update to their existing games, or a new FPS game, or at least an improvement of their abysmal Steam support, over this stupid shit.

I don't care what you think is a "factor", it's unethical for Valve to take people's money for a product and then not properly support said product so that it actually works. That's why there is a major complaint, you dumb contrarian.

You know what didn't work? Matchmaking. There are literally 0 people playing in my country.

Yes, free options were available, but I naively expected that Valve were actually going to do the right thing and make Matchmaking worth playing, so I didn't have to go to TF2Cancer.
> spending any money at all

Even if you look at the entire sentence, it's sill objectively false, because you make claims about what "everyone" wants to see. Even if you changed "everyone" to "most people" you would have no evidence whatsoever to back up your claims.

Half-life was just a singleplayer jumping puzzle game with shooting elements.

Half-life 2 was just the above but also a tech demo for the (at the time) new and revolutionary Source engine.

Both HL games are "meh" at best and no-one actually wants them. Valve knows this so in order to make money from a possible HL3 they're gunna have to wait another 5-10 years until they have a shiny new engine with state-of-the-art gfx and physics to show off in it, then base all of their future games off of that engine in order to make money from it.
>>
>>386723778
And they didn't even make it, like nearly all of their games. 90% of Valve games are just mods they bought from other people.

>Dota 2
Old WC3 mod

>TF2
The old TF Classic mod for Half-Life

>Counterstrike
HL mod

>Gary's Mod
Sandbox mod utilizing the Source Engine

etc etc

Announcement was disappointing but I forgot about it like an hour later.
They should've just dump a demo so people can actually play the game and see what it's about. There lots of card games that each play differently, saying "here we're making a card game" is like saying "we're making a FPS"
It might actually be good and Valve has trade/marketplace shit already implemented.

A cardgame by Valve isn't even surprising, the signs started appearing years ago.

I don't understand how anyone can be upset about this longer than a day.
At least make some good arguments instead of entitled complaints or pulling shit out of your ass like this guy

There are only a few +thousand dollar cards in MtG, probably the most popular TCG.
Sure, there are cards that cost several hundred dollars but those are either special prints or foils.
