This has got more to do with the idea that the good guy has some bad in him but manages to restrain it. It's nothing to do with morals, rather with psychology. Think of Batman. The no-killing rule is the barrier that keeps his personal demons at bay. Doesn't matter whether it's morally better to not kill.
