Pokemon is popular almost entirely because of it's character designs. Almost every other monster franchise has bland or extremely complicated designs that aren't as marketable or memorable, and don't include girls and women in their target demographics.

Yo-Kai Watch also has colorful and cartoony designs but it's too Japanese and too 'ugly-cute' for other countries' tastes.

The fact that Pokemon never removes characters from its roster, meaning your favorites are guaranteed to stick around until the end of time probably helps. And that your party can even be uploaded to the latest games, so the virtual creatures aren't quite was ephemeral as they are in other franchises.

It's got a very slow start, the best part of the game is raising awesome digimon and battling. The plot never gets good and quickly becomes another "knights of the round" wankfest and the digital world consists of one tiny path and then the game ends.

the thing that makes pokemon so popular is that it's designs are really remarkable,with them either being cute or really cool(with some big exceptions),besides the series being extremely easy to get into and the massive marketing it has.
Another thing about pokemon is that pokemon are not some kind of "entity" in the pokemon world,they're just fauna,which is why they're so relatable,as we have animals in our world that can also do various different things(and some also fight each other)

if you want to compete with pokemon,you need extremely remarkable designs,some real good marketing and a premise that doesn't sound too out of this world

Pokemon is the best for monster collecting due to the sheer volume and mostly consistent quality of the mons, but it's a shit game for actual monster raising.

The problem with Pokemon derivatives is that they put quantity first, both in terms of the number of monsters and in how many the player owns at once. Things like Dragonseeds and Monster Rancher where you interact with a single monster at a time and personally bond with them from birth until death are sorely lacking in the modern age.

I like how the monsters in Digimon look more like monsters you'd fight AGAINST in RPGs, right down to the weak ones being little blobby slime guys. It doesn't fit that concept exactly, and there are an excessive number of humanoids in the upper tiers, but I also wouldn't rule an RPG out from having humanoid angel and knight monsters toward the end of the game. The fact that some of them are ugly or bizarre is part of the charm for me, not that there aren't some just plain bad designs in the lot.

I think so. It's got a fuckton of content, and is the most polished version of the World formula. The problem is that the formula itself can be offputting to some people, so it's hard to reccomend.
