I have two Xbone controllers for PC (Xbone and Xbone S) despite not owning an xbone.
The dpad is pretty nice, only have dual shock 1,2 and 3 to compare. I've tried the PS4 controller and that was comfy as well still prefer the Xbone controllers overall once I got used to the less cramped layout.

Xbone S controller feels like a regression, only got it for the bluetooth so I can use it on linux and adroid as well.
It is lighter and less noisy but the dpad and triggers+bumpers feel a fair amount looser, still clicky and responsive but not as good a feel as the older Xbone controller.
Digging the audio jack, was expecting audio quality through them to be horrid was pleasantly surprised.

Ever since I was forced to use dpad for Crash 1 I've preferred it. Easier to get yourself aligned
