>Researchers had about 100 people play shooter games like Call of Duty, Killzone, and Borderlands 2, along with 3D Super Mario games for 90 hours. They found that participants had less grey brain matter in their hippocampus after playing action games.
>The hippocampus is a major part of the brain that helps maintain spatial and episodic memories. And reduced grey matter in this part of the brain has previously been linked to higher risks of brain illnesses, including depression, schizophrenia, PTSD, and Alzheimer's disease.
>Researchers found that 85% of gamers rely on their caudate nucleus (also known as "response learners") more than their hippocampus (spatial learners) while navigating action video games. This adversely affects the hippocampus because as the amount of grey matter increases in the caudate nucleus, it decreases in the hippocampus. Meanwhile, playing the 3D Super Mario games for 90 hours resulted in increased grey matter in the hippocampus for all the participants, according to the study.

Holy shit, western games actually make you dumb

>COD, killzone, and borderlands

well no shit they didn't need any spacial awareness for the singleplayer of those games, especially compared to a fucking platformer

make them play 90 hours of 90s shooting games and lets see what happens
>>
Those shooters don't really require much thinking or skill. They should have tested it with shooters that require skill and actual thinking.

Redo that study with some fuckin Quake, then we can talk.

The Virtual Boy came out in 1995. Why are journalists always the ones who know less about the subject?

it does have pic related though

Borderlands 2 harms my brain just thinking about it

All of those games would be boring as fuck to play for 90 hours.
>>
>>386637454
1. Because video game journalism doesn't exist
2. Because actual journalists don't play video games and are only forced to write tech articles from their editors because there's clickbait to be had

also
>shitty games that don't require bain power make you dumb
>good games like mario platformers that require you to make actual spatial decisions work the brain

WOW
>>
No one should play games for 90 hours straight, fucking dumbassed

This is the study that all these articles are going on about.

Well considering those modern shooters are mostly composed of "stop, aim and shoot, repeat" of course it would focus on unconscious leaning part of the brain, it takes very little focus, while a 3d platformer is all about spatial awareness, so again, no surprise. So it seems like this isnt much of breaking news to people who play vidya as much as it is a surpise to people who dont play vidya that different types of games stimulate a person in different ways.

They should study gamers playing some RTS 4x games, that'll show you some fucking grey matter.

It's breaking news to people who write click bait and can write articles with titles such as "shooters linked to Alzheimer's" "these games degrade your brain" "are video games bad for you? This study will shock you!"

it takes a certain intelligents to play Hearts of Iron 3 and do well

Any team based competitive game may actually harm your brain.
The absolute retards on my team almost gave me an aneurism quite a few times.
