Their DPS isn't that bad. The problem is the class is so clunky that it's not fun to play and if you make a single mistake you're losing several hundred DPS.

Assuming you are in a group with people who you know are good, you'd pick the SMN because it does more DPS. You're not going to have many people dying so it's not like you'll need the raises.

Of course if you don't need the raises though you'd probably just take BLM over RDM anyway. SMNs getting changed in 4.1 isn't it? It does need changing, just not buffs.

With the current job the only thing they could do (and won't) is require only one Dreadwyrm Aether to summon Bahamut but you can still stack two.
Maintaining Aetherflow/Aethertrial/Dreadwyrm through death, having Aetherflow refresh on death and/or having some way to make Aetherflow cooldown faster would also help.

I think it's useful. You send your cards out and then you can use it to instant refresh. If you get good cards it's fantastic, otherwise discard them.
Basically it's a second chance if you get bad draws and an instant refresh.
