What are the Do's and Don't of game design?

I'll start,
DONT:
>Invisible walls
>Dodge has a cooldown
>sell power for real money

what else
>>
Don't put more than 50% of the budget in anything other than gameplay
>>
>>386635348
>>Dodge has a cooldown
thats literally the only way i survived bayonettas god-awful shmup levels because i couldnt see shit
>>
>>386635348
DONT
>have both a limited ammo supply and a gun repair system where the gun gets weaker the more it is used
>have any sort of weapon repair system
>have weapon durability
>>
Don't
>Sniper rifles
>Sniper class
>>
>>386635704
funny seeing how most modern AAA out something like 80% into advertising.

BUY MY BOOK

The book is a criingey compilation of /v/ what you like/dislike in games threads and I want to know how to get it unpublished, but Amazon is a mess to navigate.
>>
DO:
>Ranged weapons use projectiles instead of hitscan
>Automate tedious actions such as crafting or climbing

Unmarked collectibles.
>>
>>386636889
Wow. I fucked that up, lol.
>>
>>386636889
Fuck you, what's wrong with collectibles?
>>
>>386637016
They're garbage game design. Shit's just not fun. Nobody likes scouring every corner of the level. You only like collectibles 'cause you're not averse to using guides. Either that, or you're a Nintendo fan.
>>
>>386636889
DO NOT DO THIS EVEN AS A JOKE
>Unmarked collectibles hidden in nooks and crannies you would never think twice about
>>
>>386637243
Exactly. Fuck that shit.
>>
>>386635348
It's all relative.
So long as there's a buyer, do whatever.
Probably a bad idea if you intentionally try to antagonise your buyer.
But then again Kojima does that and it works so whatev

Dos:
An rpg has to be made by people experienced with tabletop RPG's even if the game in question isn't even remotely similar to any table top rpg.

certain DONTS that modern(i.e women) game developers insert in their games will never happen in a game made by a seasoned DM. things like pointless side quests, self insert npcs, immortal npcs, taking away the PCS power/items, gating power behind pointless fetch quests and collectables and many other small things that really ruin a game. if you tried this shit with a group they will find another DM. that's why classic RPGS made in the 90s-early 00s are the golden standard and everything we have today is shit.

people don't have the tabletop experience to really make good rpgs anymore
>>
>>386635947
That's because a bad game marketed a lot still makes more than twice the money than a good game with minimal marketing.

Da rules

>Opening a menu must take no more than 1.5 seconds
>scrolling and selecting items in menus should be instantaneous, latency is unacceptable
>when selecting items in a menu a satisfying sound prompt must be played, nothing too fancy just a sound with a nice "snap" to it
>Menus must always be at 60fps, no exceptions
>gameplay must always be AT THE VERY LEAST a stable 30fps. A higher framerate is preferable but stability takes precedence.
>In 3rd person games where players control a walking/running character, making a 180 degree turn should take 1 second or less, realism be damned
>in third person games with tight areas the camera should never zoom in on the playable character to compensate for lack of space. the camera should be allowed to phase through walls
>every 3d game should have some kind of photo mode
>In a 3rd person game, unless the game heavily involves shooting guns and other projectiles, do not use an over the shoulder camera (or at least give different camera options)
>>
>>386635348
>don't give Dodge a cooldown

how fucking bad do you have to be to rely on spamming dodge constantly to win? Stop playing games you fucking suck at them.

dont

>tedious filler bullshit like the fallout 4 minutemen generated quests
>shitty gimmick enemies/weapons that take all but 1 of your health or some dumb shit (hl2 poison headcrab is an exception as it was done pretty well)
>stuff like fast travel and weapon customization locked behind shit mid-game for no reason
>photo mode for cool screenshots without using the console (only dragons dogma had this for dumb fucking reason)
>higher difficulties make enemies bullet sponges while the player takes ridiculous damage
>micro transactions at all, no loot boxes or crates or skins or supply drops or ANY of that dumb shit, nobody should have to pay more money in a game they already fucking bought
>DLC is full of shit that should have been in the base game (looking at you civ)
>DLC with one really cool feature and a bunch of dumb filler garbage so that people have to pay full price for the one cool thing (looking at you ck2)
>crafting just so you can say crafting is in the game
>base building just so you can say base building is in the game
>voiced protagonists in a goddamn rpg what the fuck bethesda
>annoying repetitive music anywhere (especially menus or shop screens)

DO
>Make your fastest characters in a team game do middle of the road damage to ensure and equal balance of the speedster's need to stick and move and his opponent's attempts to hit him, ensuring relatively extended fights and a feeling of fairness between both players

DON'T
>Make your fastest characters do damage on the higher end so the speedster can kill two people before anyone can react AND can also remain unable to be hit, making the fight unfair for most players/characters and inflating the speedster's ego by a factor of one thousand

>>386637396
>not wanting to explore every single nook and cranny of the world to find new and interesting stuff out of the beaten path that eventually leads to the golden ending of the game
>>
>>386635858
In MMOs weapon/armour durability and repair is actually a good system to prevent economic inflation. Since you're always losing money to keep equipment maintained that money is being taken out of circulation, offsetting the money that's coming in from loot.

That shit can fuck off in single player games though.

Limiting time spent in the menu should be a priority. I hate RPGs that have you managing an inventory screen every minute, or not being able to quickly switch to an item. Pic related is also the best system, providing there's a button to automatically fit items in the most efficient manner.
