OR/AS even if you've played R/S/E before. They're superior to X/Y in just about every way.
X/Y also makes it so that only the D-pad moves your character normally. The stick is permanently tied to rollerblades and you can't take them off.

Good on you. ORAS are my favourite pokemon games to date. Best region and a shitload of quality of life improvements. Secret bases haven't been upgraded all that much but they're still fun.

ORAS. There's a lot of advantages the games have over XY, the region and enemy teams are much better than it. There's also new or refined RS features like Secret Bases and Dexnav that aren't in XY. The only thing that's gone is trainer customization.
Expect less singleplayer postgame than Emerald. Most of your postgame would probably be the Battle Maison (basically a French-looking Battle Tower), secret base making/sharing, and breeding/battling online due to how easy Gen VI makes it. There's no Frontier.

Since you've already got Black, I'd recommend getting Black/White 2 too. You can sync up with your old Black save to get bonuses from it that give the game more features and battles that are normally missing if you don't. If you have a friend with Black 2, make sure you get challenge mode from them too, since without it the games are easy, with the XY standard of 3-mon gym leaders and 4-mon Elite Four.

I played through the original Emerald and Sapphire about 3 times each, but I haven't been able to go back to them after playing Gen 4 and up due to how slow progression feels. There are lots of long, drawn out routes with nothing interesting in them and the vast stretches of water are cancerous, even with the increased swim speed.

ORAS is an unforgivably lazy game that demonstrates front-and-center the many ways in which the company's design philosophies have shifted for the worse since Emerald and HGSS, and I can certainly get on board with calling it a shit game on those merits, but it's definitely not the worst when any of the above four exist.
As long as he didn't actually buy it, it's fine.
