the one bad thing about the Gothic example is needing to talk to every fucking person to find the right couple of people who actually have relevant dialogue. right there you're breaking your immersion by talking to people who just repeat dialogue from earlier because they have nothing relevant to say
a good middle ground would be to have some sort of marker on the people who have new dialogue or dialogue that's relevant to the quest you're on. it wouldn't have to show up on the map so you'd still have to walk near them. don't know how to do it without it ending up being the mmo exclamation point over the head, but I'm sure someone could figure it out

Fact of the matter is that the game is designed from a basic level to accomodate for cheat eye and other cancerous methods. You can say "turn off everything" but the game was never really designed around that and the game simply isn't fun to play like that, just very clunky.

Meanwhile a game like Gothic is designed from the ground up to be like that which is why it's more satisfying.

I'm not bashing the game for giving you different ways to finish a quest. But how is it difficult to talk to people and walk to a cave to find a dead orc with a weapon? What happened to your thesis of "What makes a quest good is the challenge"?

The challenge was to talk to a dude and walk to a cave, it's barely a step above a fucking walking simulator. You could even find this solution before even trying to fucking fight an orc.

At the early point of the game where you get the quest it is extremely difficult to bring down an orc (although not impossible). The blacksmith is asking you to do something nearly impossible to prove yourself and that's why you need to find an alternative way to get the weapon.

Exactly, the great thing in this particular quest in Gothic II is not the "difficulty" but rather the fact that they take something as standard as a "kill, get item, return"-quest and force you to think outside of that box as the enemy still is out of your league.

This discussion of difficulty aside they're two pretty different games and they're honestly both really good at their own thing so yeh

That's fine, and I appreciate that there are different ways to finish that quest (even some that actually include fighting a damn orc). But the OP posted an image with a clear thesis at the beginning, and it's some dumb shit.

I have my own share of problems and dislikes with the witcher 3 and its quests. However, a lack of difficulty or challenge is not the problem.

I'm tired of these kiddies making statements like "what makes X good is Y, therefore all these games without Y are SHIT". It's even worse when that statement is not even relevant to the example given.
