ARMS is good, but Nintendo played some part in killing it off by releasing Splatoon 2 so close to it. It also doesn't help that no matter how casual it can be, ARMS is a fighting game and requires some practice to git gud while Spla2n is just a game where you can blame your teammates or shit internet connection, which makes it less stressful/more fun to play than ARMS

This. I love the game but I seriously get bodied when playing ranked. I try my best to keep up though. I admit that I haven't been able to play the game nearly as much as I should have.

Honestly, I didn't mind falling for it. Played it a shitload the first two weeks, and judging by how Max Brass went, I'll end up spending another few days on it every fighter update before going back to other things.

This. Splatoon and its mechanics are very varied and can be used in a variety of team based multiplayer modes, a hoard mode, and a single player obstacle course. There's a lot to do to keep even the most casual players occupied. ARMS is one-on-one and constantly locks your camera on your opponent. Even in party mode where they add a button to change who you're targetting, there's really not a whole lot of options there besides "git gud."

If ARMS had free movement and larger arenas, with things like spring jumps and grapple points to move around, it could have been the next Splatoon. Instead it's a pretty shallow fighting game that doesn't even explore its own characters and lore outside of a Japanese Twitter account.

I really hope the sequel has more interaction between characters. I can dig the gameplay over story mindset, but having absolutely nothing to give these characters any personality ultimately makes the game a lot more forgettable.

What type of controls are you using? That could be affecting the way you're thinking about it. It's a simple system to learn, you can make a practice mode in vs by changing the settings to have your opponent stand still. Try some shit out.

Many of Nintendo's other games have other casual modes and distractions to keep you occupied and help you learn how to play. ARMS doesnt. Jumping into the party mode is just asking to get your ass handed to you, and you can't play with people around your skill level until you've beaten the single player on a higher skill level. I think all they had to do was change how you unlock arms and have more frequent updates. The way the game currently is, you can try every arm (but not every combination) right from the start because one character starts with it. This doesn't leave most players much to look forward to unless they choose to only play as a single character. They could have used the level system like Splatoon where you unlock a new arm or two every level and then choose which you want to buy.

As for updates, they should have kept only about half the arms available and added one or two every week.

I just wish they'd put the option to actually invite people to lobbies.
Its horrible to add someone you just had a good fight with and beign unable to invite him to your lobby because you simply cannot contact him in any way.

For the time being you'll probably have better luck with joining a discord. There are quite a few for the game and that' s where you'll find the most consistent people outside of just ranked/party. I can link you 2 if you still wanna give it a shot.
