I'd take every account of that with a grain of salt. Women cannot physically stand up to men in fights. A couple maybe but a campaign's worth? No. Most well recorded accounts of women in combat were in defensive manoeuvres wherein their numbers needed bolstering or settlements would die.
Shield maidens are a meme. Warrior Queens are a meme. Battle field tacticians and leaders who direct armies to victory and out strip their peers in military excellence, discipline, strategy and tactics? Yes. Women front-lining without getting unilaterally minced by their male opponents? No.
In terms of medieval and ancient combat women could be excellent leaders and proficient in raiding/guerrilla skirimish. They weren't capable of being warriors and I'd task you to find a well regarded historical source that says otherwise.
