>How did we reach this point?
AAA studios became leashed by their publishers and the general business practice ideology of minimal risks - maximum profits.

This means that big game devs can only make shit that is as barebones and proven as possible. Streamlining gameplay elements (ie removing healing items in favor of HP regenerating -> no HP pickups -> simpler and more linear map designs) speeds up development time. And now we got an entire generation that's gotten used to streamlined, casual trash, and keeps buying them. And since people buy that shit, studios make more of it every year.

Meanwhile, small indie and mod teams are not restricted by the markets. They do what they want, and only way to shine through the huge gray mass is to do your shit as well as possible, bringing in new ideas. It captures the 1980s and 1990s spirit the innovators and pioneers of this whole industry had once; good friends doing fun games they wanted, about shit they liked!

>>
>>386533230
It's almost as if mods are the lifeblood of gaming.

I'm sure that gaming becoming stale right after publishers started doing everything in their power to hinder mods is just a coincidence.

Doom mod thread? Doom mod thread. What are your favorite mods and mod combos to use?
>Smooth Doom + Perkristian's HQ SFX + Arachnosoft music packs (the high quality "listening" versions are great for casually listening to Doom music as well)
>Samsara
>>
>>386532650
not entirely, all that shit would still work with mods support - after all, you make the product more attractive this way.
the real problem is the planned obsolescence , you're supposed to by another $60 season pass (which would have to compete with mods) and buy the rehashed sequel a year later (who would when the previous game is almost perfect due to mods?)
>>
Where can I get new music packs for Doom? I've found a couple but no actual archive of various music packs, it's the one thing I cannot find.
>>
>>386527703
Name one AAA FPS game that's worse than that.
>>
>>386535050
True, but ultimately what you described is just another extreme manifestation of the modern business practice. Quite a bit like modern printers automatically shitting themselves and mysteriously "breaking" after X amount of use, or at least making you buy more ink long before there'd be any need to.

Still, the point stands: AAA games have become more and more "disposable", single-use type products.

>>386535276
Just about every single Call Of Duty and modern Medal Of Honor -games.
NuDoom.
>>
>>386527703
Doom is shit, even nostalgia fags are only pretending to like it.
>>
>>386535379
But why is it shit?
>>
>>386535379
I can see why it was popular at the time but I tried playing it again recently and it's pretty boring. The enemies are dull to fight and the "complex level design" doesn't really add anything.
>>
>>386528347

>>386535334
>Just about every single Call Of Duty and modern Medal Of Honor -games.
>NuDoom.
Why can't you be fucking specific? Name a specific title that you've actually played and tell me that it's worse than this mod.

The fact that you even mentioned Medal of Honor, a franchise that hasn't seen a new release in half a decade, makes me a bit suspicious of your expertise on contemporary FPS games.

Sgt Mark does it again! Who else here is supporting him on Patreon for the definitive way to play Doom? No need for those clunky and outdated controls and weapons when you've got this!
>>
>>386535379
I have really no nostalgia towards it, as I got to play it very late into my adulthood, and it still holds up extremely well.

It's actually a bit weird to have such level of freedom and responsibility in an FPS game, if you have gotten used to the typical, post-00s shooters.

>Still, the point stands: AAA games have become more and more "disposable", single-use type products.

which is imo one of the reasons all that zombie survival battle royale crap is so popular. all the AAA shit is over-engineered, focus-tested and designed to play it exactly like the devs want to make it more idiot proof - which also takes all the fun out of it. there's no player agency anymore, only skinner boxes for so-so games to keep people playing.

People like to underestimate mods because some either break games and cause bugs or are just designed around silly and whacky ideas, to the point they don't feel like actual games.
But when done right, you can have some amazing projects, that can stand on their own feet.
I enjoyed mods like Golden Souls and Tei Tenga Incident, even if the former has some focus on platforming.
>>
Doesn't the dev of this mod post updates in the /vr/ doom threads?
>>
>>386537380
He does, but also on his Tumblr.
Now he's working on something he called "Project Booty"
>>
Why is there so much stuff for doom and none for heretic or hexen? It's wrong.
>>
>>386537558
Don't they use different versions of Doom's engine or something?
I know Strife plays to differently.
>>
>>386537013
>You can't top passion with money, although AAA tries desperately to do so.

which they wouldn't even need to, mods basically make your product more attractive = more sales. it just doesn't work with their current business model pumping out shit every year.
and mods are a good way to gauge popularity and interest which can later be monetized
>yfw steam's top 3 games are all former mods

>People like to underestimate mods because some either break games and cause bugs or are just designed around silly and whacky ideas, to the point they don't feel like actual games.
I just want a eternal silence battlefield/eafront mod since dice are shit at design. just give people the assets and let them have the game they want.
>>
>>386537439
>Now he's working on something he called "Project Booty"
Pirate Doom x H-Doom? Cause that's what it sounds like.
>>
>>386537558
I know right, quite sad. Still, you have awesome mods for them, like Wrath of Cronos (it works also for doom and Strife), Playing Heretic co-op with this mod and a friend, it is awesome.
>>
>>386537558
Heretic is Doom with medieval paint on it, and fairly less well known, but I think it does have a few map packs. Hexen is kind of a different beast entirely, but I know that there was a Dark Souls inspired mod in the works for it (you can find vids on Youtube).
>>
>>386537664
Unfortunately, that's not what he's working on.

>all profits would go to Bethesda and/or Zenimax

>>
>>386538336
I guess. Although some of them are fine, the monster animations look more like someone just added more frames to the old animations and slapped reversed versions of them on the ends. They just don't look like natural movements.

The weapon animations are fine though, and the new chaingun is fucking amazing.
>>
>>386539374
I just wish I could have the SSG gibs alone.
>>
>>386539269
This looks awesome, downloading now.
>>
>>386539374
If I remember correctly, all of Smooth Doom's animations are basically just additional "in-between" frames. So all of those animations are working roughly within the same frame limit of the game's original frame limits, just with more detailed frames in between the standard frames, so it can probably lead to some very quick looking and unnatural movements. I think it all looks great though.
>>
>>386536772
>which is imo one of the reasons all that zombie survival battle royale crap is so popular
Exactly.
On top of that, it clearly was a collective dream of many players and devs for so long, that now when we finally have tech to make such games reality, everyone and their mothers rushed to create what is now a cookie cutter openworld shooter.

The best results would lie somewhere in-between the AAA trash and this indie crap.

There's some really good level packs for both.

Because it's all a popularity contest, when you think about it. Why create stuff for Heretic when Doom plays exactly the same and is a million times more popular? Hexen on the other hand, people are just to lazy to create appropriate content for Hexen's vastly different gameplay. The worst is when people create single levels or episodic content for Hexen; it doesn't fucking work that way, it's got to be hub based.
