Shelob is one of the last or THE last, I forget, daughters of Ungoliant. Also one of the greatest. This means straight off she's several ages old and has been around straight since the First fucking Age. Sauron KNEW she was sitting in his mountains eating his orcs and he purposfully did fuck-all about it because he was fairly confident she was not worth the casualties it would take to force her out (not even kill, just force her to go away) and he was in absolutely no shape to fight her himself. He eventually just made her a garbage-disposal ala-Dwarf-Fort style and had a mighty chuckle whenever prisoners, infiltrators or idiot orcs tried to cut through her territory.

And keep in mind her mom, Ungoliant, is literally the scariest fucking thing in LOTR lore. Ungoliant is a goddamn cosmic nightmare spider who teamed up with Sauron's big-boss while he was screwing up heaven and NOBODY KNOWS WHERE SHE CAME FROM. To clarify that, in the lore, God and his choirboys sang the universe and everything in it into creation. Except her. It's actually pretty fun if you can get into it. Since a vast majority of the lore is just a gorillion short-stories, scribblings and half-done ideas that were all collected and shoved haphazardly into a single book, it gets a bit wonky, but as a lore/creation story it's pretty generic and familiar.
