the only real grind is getting to end game with the shitloads of quests, after that it takes about a week and a half to catch up to everyone. XIV is the least grindy MMO I've ever played. Then again, I'm used to shit like Ragnarok Online and other korean titles, so I don't know much about how modern MMOs are grind-wise.
There are tons of shit to do in endgame other than raiding, but not all of them have "carrot in sticks". Most of them you just do it for fun and minor rewards like housing items and pets.

When the gcd is almost up, it will immediately go into the next action if queued. Waiting for the gcd to finish completely is losing about 0.1 sec every time and during the course of a fight, that quickly adds up.
