I admit I'm a casual and had only played 3 and New Vegas, so I was a little afraid of playing Fallout 1. However, even with no experience on it, I quickly grew accustomed to it. I've gotten into a few fights I couldn't manage, but there's a huge factor of chance. It's not really that hard.

I love arcanum. Fantastic world/lore, and my favorite video game music (dat romantic strings chamber music ost). It was pretty buggy on release but terra arcanum mod/patch fixed everything.

it is a complete mess of balance . . . just like every other CRPG of that era. have fun winning fallout 1 with anything but small guns as a new player. at least in arcanum, melee, throwing, and even magic are all noob friendly. none of the builds are impossible tier, hell I beat the game with a "mad bomber" style dwarf throwing explosives I made out of rags from dumpsters. in fallout, throwing is damn near useless. and my very first playthrough was real time melee barbarian which was easy as hell, I didn't even know that most people consider arcanum real time to be impossible (until I played non-melee)

arcanum combat is literally miles better than fallout 1 and 2 combat. but somehow people keep reeeeeeing because why? guns are bad? in fallout half the damn builds are auto-lose.

Not the combat unfortunately. Melee destroys EVERYTHING and, even though you can gimp your own character a little to keep the game challenging, companions level up on their own and many of them focus exclusively on melee.

Adding to that, I remember choosing Magnus, Sebastian and Virgil as companions, not because I liked them as characters, but because they were pretty much the only ones with balanced builds that never became overpowered. Some of the most interesting characters lore wise (the dwarf king comes to mind) were just too overpowered to keep.

lockpicking
>really comes in handy for exploration and getting loot when you really need it

>pretty much every fallout game shines the most when you have high speech and get more options/story and alternate ways to solve quests

gifted trait is pretty much mandatory, those extra SPECIAL points really help, and the downside barely matters. agility 10 is pretty much mandatory for any build, and you need good perception to actually hit things with your guns. next charisma, then intelligence, then endurance, then strength, then luck. just make sure you have like 5 strength so you can use most of the small guns.

Finished FO1, about 20 hours into FO2. Thought FO1 was okay, but loving FO2 so far.

One thing that is bugging me, but I've always been told that the original Fallout games heavily featured 1950's Americana imagery or subversion of the culture of the time, but I'm really not seeing much of it at all. It's like 98% post-apocalyptic wasteland.

It's not readily apparent unless you look at the cars and a few of the building motifs.

Bethesda really just amped it up to 11 and made everything a sort of wonky 1950's sci-fun shit setting when really it was pretty bleak. Everything was modern in the first two it just diverged from our timeline and kept some things we didn't. Magnetic tape and shit for example.

That said, back when these games were made a lot of the people who made them had used magnetic tape storage and shit growing up. Like the 80's already was the science fiction of the future to the 50's. So it was really kind of hard to place and alien on purpose, just recognizable enough to draw you in, but alien enough to make it feel off.
