I played 1 and really liked it, but I got fed up with 2 some time after getting the ship and wandering about for hours. Should I get back to it and try to finish it?

I've never played one until I bought VIII a few days ago. I'm only about 7 hours in but I'm really loving it. I was expecting to dislike it because I'm not a big gamer and even the best games like OoT I just can't get into and lose interest in quite quickly, but I'm really digging the entire experience and can't wait to get further and eventually try another, probably V.

You can't walk two steps into that thing without being bombarded with a random encounter. How could people actually endure, much less enjoy, those absurd encounter rates? My 10 years old self already found the Final Fantasy II (IV) rates to be annoying enough on the SNES.

Good thing the DQ series got more reasonable after each new game, now one will actually want to fight while exploring the map.

Toriyama hasn't really did much since the 90's anyways. Guessing his main thing is bosses rather than enemies. As for game direction I feel Horii has been training most people at the Enix side.

Well Toriyama is still involved with character designs, I'm sure there's others doing the full work while he just gives his opinion, much as is the case with Toyotaro, but I would love to see some new enemy designs come from him.
