Edgy can be fine if the character isn't a whiny little exposition-dumping cunt.

Vergil might have been edgy but he wasn't unlikable. He didn't complain, he didn't cry about his problems. He acted like a man, set himself some goals to improve his situation and set about achieving them. Throughout all of DMC3 you get ONE vague line that outlines his motivation, something along the lines of "you need power if you want to protect those you care about, yet you don't even have the power to protect yourself". He never cries to Dante about how shit his life is and how fucked up he is due to their mother's death, he never cries about how powerless it made him feel and how that's his entire motivation as a character, to never feel like that again.

Then, in the end after seeing just how strong his brother is able to be he comes to accept that maybe he was wrong. He finally comes to accept that his human half isn't a weakness by choosing his mother's amulet over Sparda, at the same time Dante comes to terms with his demon side. But he doesn't say it, it's all in his actions.

That's why Vergil isn't hated. Because he's a good character that doesn't presume the person learning about him is a retard. He's painted from subtleties.

When they do their final samurai pass shit Dante is running from the portal to the human world at Vergil and Vergil is running from the demon world towards the portal to earth.

After the pass Dante ends up on the demon side and Vergil ends up on the human side, which is the moment they both come to terms with the sides of themselves they've had problems with up until that point.

I think it's intentional. Before that moment Vergil would always have taken Sparda given the choice. He craves the power his father had desperately and he blames his mother's death on the fact that she was human and therefor not strong enough to protect herself. He's clearly given the option to take Sparda in that moment but he chooses the pendant instead.
