Excuse me commissar, but if the Warhammer™ 40k universe is so great, why is there only one good 40k video game despite the dozens of attempts?

That's a lie, Guardsman. There are, in fact, several good games : Dawn of war, dawn of war 2, chaos gate and Space Marine. His ignorance could only mean that he was an agent of the ruinous powers.
And Fire warrior, but that doesn't count because you play as a filthy xenos..

I honestly can't even tell, because I only played it 12 years ago and still have nostalgia goggles. It seemed good to me at the time, but then again I was probably a stupid kid with shit taste. Is it really that bad though ?
>>
>>386438737
fire warrior is not good, the game is pretty awful actually, from mechnical and lore standpoints.
Hell, even space marine is borderline mediocre, again, from mechanical and lore perspectives, but the writing is also dumb.
>>
>>386438989
It's really baffling how no one attempt to try it.
BF2 for Xboxhuge has that kind of mechanic, right?
>>
>>386439267
Even though I hated the "2 weapons only, and one of them has to be a Tau gun" system of Fire Warrior, I still kind of liked it for it's atmosphere, especially the end-game part when Chaos arrives.
>>
>>386438737
The fact that you only chose to explain yourself after killing that guardsman only goes to show your lack of care for the loyal soldiers of the Emperor. Your execution shall be mercifully short.

GW controls the licence and decides who gets to make 40k games. But if you look at all the 40k games on Steam, you can see that GW has been fairly liberal in giving the rights out.

So, either GW has decided to shoot itself in the foot by only giving the green light to a bunch of crap or, more likely, only shitty devs with crappy ideas are putting the time and effort in to making 40k games

You don't deserve good games. No game is perfect, Mordheim has its own share of flaws and those flaws aren't so light either, but it's a unique game when it comes to sheer tactical depth.

Pretty sure it's Legion, where they have a character who promises himself to some Old Ones for immortality and he comes back as a new person each time he dies. So on that vein...

>pledged to the Old Ones
>have to collect artifacts from different points in time and space
>start off in a hub ala DeS
>warp portals take you to the various levels, where you have to progress through and beat a boss
>one level for example could be an Imperial ship in the middle of a daemonic invasion whilst in the Warp, have to fight through rooms of Imperial Naval security and daemons to kill a daemon prince at the end
>collect random weapons, gear and armour for yourself
>reincarnate at the hub on death
>>

The game is finished, m8. The content that exists now is all there ever will be, the team has moved onto developing Necromunda, which will be basically Mordheim, but in WH40K setting and will focus on power struggles between rival gangs in an Imperial hive city.

GW were dicks with the license and refused to hand it out for a long time. They even revoked the license from Blizzard and inadvertently spawned Warcraft.

When vidya became mainstream and DoW blew up, GW rushed to try and make up for the last 2 decades they wasted. The result is them giving out the license like candy so 90% of Warhammer games are indie garbage. The small number that don't suck ass like Gothic and Mordheim are barely played because people assume they're shit just because the license is so cancerous now.
>>
>>386445040
>Warpstone Rush is still the only viable mission type because secondary objectives are still worth way too much XP.
Eh, not really. I love just smashing enemy warbands because they drop some really good blue and purple loot on higher warband ratings. Since the shops barely ever sell the things you exactly need, I think just fighting enemy warbands and looting them and not giving a fuck about Wyrdstone, if you have enough for your current payment, is a viable playstyle too.

But yes really, doing a mission and not meeting the objective is almost a waste of a mission since objective gives 3xp to ALL team members. That's so much more xp than you can get with kills, and is necessary for getting anywhere with leveling and story missions.

Yeah, but sometimes the side objective is to just kill selected members of the enemy warband and pick up their trinkets. If you're worried purely about leveling, it's a much more preferable side objective compared to gathering wyrdstone. There's also the side objective of stealing the enemy Idol from their cart and bringing it back to yours, but I play mostly warbands with heavy infantry and don't have anyone fast enough to do this side objective.
>>
>>386442036
I think the problem they're having is that people who want to make warhammer games are fans first, game devs second. They're big tabletop fans who know the lore inside out and only pursue game development so they can create a game in a series they love. They don't often have legitimately good devs offering their time because warhammer is incredibly niche and nerdy.

Let's hope Total Warhams will break that image of the franchise and more competent devs will see that Warhammer Fantasy is a franchise that has a solid fanbase who actually buys games.

>>386446367
>sometimes the side objective is to just kill selected members of the enemy warband and pick up their trinkets
That is actually really hard to do, because
a) it selects the highest ranking members
b) sometimes the AI weirds out and sends dudes running off after warpstone
So like 8/10 games you kill all their filler and they flee before you get the targets, 1/10 games one of the targets fucks off to some random corner to collect warpstone, and 1/10 you actually succeed.

The other mission type is impossible since you have to run someone ALL the way to their cart and back to yours. So that leaves Warpstone Rush as the only viable way to ensure that team-wide 3xp and make sure you're not spending 30 minutes or more on a game just for a chance at some trinkets.
>>
>>386438989
That would be difficult to make because you would be the only guardsmen capable of surviving. You think you die easily? Imagine all the AI drones dropping like flies until you have nothing left.

IL2 Sturmahawk has this feature, by the way. It's WW2 plane game.
>>
>>386446726
Wait, but how do you know what side objective you're going to get? I thought you get random side objectives and can't see which one you're going to get before you actually launch the mission?

It's more 40k that gets treated that way (understandably). Sadly a lot of people don't know about fantasy at all, even though it has way more cool shit. Tomb kings, skaven, lizardmen, even the ogres have a cool background. I agree, I'm looking forward to it picking up and gaining the recognition it deserves. 40k sucks though.
>>
>>386446898
On the mission map it literally gives you a different symbol for the mission types and tells you which mission you're about to do. How have you not noticed something so obvious?

>How have you not noticed something so obvious?
No idea. I've been playing this game for a long while I didn't understand that nuance. But still, you can only choose the preferred side objective when you actually have a mission available with that side objective. Due to how missions are generated, I just play everything that's not too hard without regard for the side objective and try to complete everything aside from stealing the idol. Most of the time I succeed.
>>
>>386447379
Sure you succeed, but a mission complete without the objective is a waste of time since it barely tracks you forward on gang rating. They just need more achievable mission types.
>>
>>386446635
That's not really the job of the Arbites though.
>>
>>386439043

Firewarrior was kind of mediocre, but had some nice bits about it. Playing as a Tau kind of worked as you got to look at the Imperium from a outsider perspective and they played them pretty straight. They hate your guts for being Xeno and you got to run around the huge ass ships that exist in 40k. Like here is a average 40k warship, it is a space catherdal and there are snipers in the towers as you approach the fucking bridge which is like a fucking fort. Bolters are like little rocket launchers in your tiny tau hands and have impact.

The main issue with Firewarrior is that it's a mediorce FPS. It was alright at presenting the universe even if it did make a Tau Firewarrior into Xenos Doomguy. The space marine you end up working with utterly hates you and you can here his contemp for you as he throws out radio orders to get this chaos shit sorted out. They tried killing you but you're this sneaky shit with a arsnal who killed like a dozen marines so they decided Chaos is the real issue to deal with.
