>we will never get a sci-fi game as great as Mass Effect 1 ever again

Why? This is not fair.
>>
Are there even any alternatives to Mass Effect when it comes down to space RPGs?
Only the Star Wars ones come to mind and that's also BioWare.
>>
>>386410401
>Implying it was great in the first place with clunky ass gameplay and bland sidequest worlds.
>>
>>386410401
mass effect sucked tho?
>>
>>386411885
Yep, that's basically it. There are lots of space-oriented games with rpg elements, but very few space rpg's.
>>
>>386411975
Is clunky the most nondescript descriptor ever made? Whenever I hear someone say clunky I have to seriously doubt that they even know what they don't like about the thing they are talking about.
>>
Yeah. Makes me a little sad.
>>
>>386410401
We did, it's called Mass Effect 2.
>>
>>386411885
No. Cinematic story driven AAA RPGs are already super rare simply because they take a huge team roughly 3-5 years to make and sci-fi shit in general isn't that popular to begin with.
>>
>>386410401
>I'm not the only one who didn't jump on the ME-hating bandwagon
I'll be damned
>>
>>386412129
Well fuck me I guess I'm stuck with replaying Mass Effect forever then
>>
ME1 did a lot to try to evoke a classic sci-fi feel from the suits to the screen filter to the score. It felt like a love letter to stuff like Star Trek TOS. ME2 and 3 were too far up their own ass and didn't have any charm.

Okay fine I'll explain in detail

Average ME3 hater. ME3 is unironically the best in the series because it's a good shooter while the other two are horrible rpg games and mediocre shooters.
>>
>>386412862
die
>>
>>386411975
This was the first game in the series, of course it was gonna have issues. To be totally honest i felt that its flaws gave it character and showed that they were really trying to create the whole package and were willing to risk that some things weren't gonna pan out. There was so much that could have been improved upon in a sequel and instead they decided to go with a safer and more polished pile of garbage.
>>
>>386412862

this, side quests were mmorog shit tier

ME3 was okay, you're probably disappointed if you've played before the fixed ending update.

I picked up this game on the 360 when it just came out not knowing anything about the game other than it was an RPG.

>ME1
>great
How so?
The story was mediocre and very cliche. The combat was garbage. The exploration sucked are. It had one of the worst inventory systems ever made. All the side quests were basically landing on the same copy pasted planet 30 times, and killing the same 5 enemy types in the same copy pasted bunker over....and over.......and over again.
ME1 was an average at best game, and that's being kind. /v/ really needs to stop pretending it was some flawless classic 10/10 game, because it sure as fuck wasn't.

>muh story
You're the reason why modern gaming sucks. Everything in your post is non-argumentative bullshit. If ME1 is a shit game then why should I give a flying fuck about the concepts it tries to deliver? It fails as both a shooter and a roleplaying game. Placebo choices that ultimately lead nowhere and limp as fuck guns. ME3 at least perfected one aspect of the franchise and made a fun horde mode out of it, much more than ME1 can say about itself.

Mass Effect is... ok.

I feel like it's babby's first Bioware experience. Overrated by a bunch of Xbox 360 kiddies who are now just old enough to be nostalgiafags over it.

you find linear corridor shooters fun, and "perfect"?

>"""fixed""" ending

One thing I really disliked about ME3 was how it tried to be this grand, big budget spectacle, with cinematic cutscenes set to melodramatic music and such. Every other step you took in the game it would force you to stop so you could watch it jerk itself off over what a big self important deal it was. But the writing was still the same cringey Bioware nerd writing it had always been. But Bioware writing always worked because the games were fairly small and personal, and didn't take themselves too seriously. Seeing that kind of writing in a big clusterfuck of a super-serious big deal debacle was just horrible. And I'm talking little things that most people never mention, like e.g. the Palavin cutscenes, some of the Citadel scenes, etc.
>>
>>386414163
I really am a sucker for "prevail against all odds" types of stories.

1, 2, Tactics and New Vegas. When people always talk about "not enough sci-fi rpg's" they must only mean the shitty, ugly high fantasy and generic as fuck with space magic. So far there's been 4 released with no other character able to top things like Lou tenant, The Master, Frank Horrigan Elijah, Mr House and Josua Grahm.
>>
Mass Effect 1 was shit.

>generic cover shooting gameplay with guns that feel like you're shooting wet farts
>only 4 weapon types, which all behaved the exact same, weapon mods did little to fix this
>a whopping total of 2 gun models for each weapon type, one of which was an ugly fishgun
>copy-pasted level design, enjoy fighting through the same crate-filled bunkers on every planet
>every planet is an empty as fuck recolored desert where you drive in a straight line for 5 minutes until you reach one of the aforementioned copy-pasted bunkers
>mako story missions were literally just "drive along linear road, obliterate cannon fodder enemies, dodge comically slow-moving projectiles from armatures/towers"
>zero depth in the skill point system, no such thing as different builds or playstyles within each class. Just dump points into incremental stat increases
>too much overlap between classes re: available skills and playstyles
>boring itemization, weapons and armor respectively all had the same 3 basic stat attributes, with mods just incrementally being renamed [MOD] II, [MOD] III, [MOD] IV, etc
>boring as fuck companions aside from garrus and wrex
>hacking/lock picking skills were pointless thanks to the metric fuckton of omni-gel the game dumps on you
>terrible companion AI
>terrible enemy AI whose only strategy was to run up to whatever crate you were taking cover behind and shoot you in the face while yelling ENEMIES EVERYWHERE every 5 seconds
>introduced us to the cancer known as the dialogue wheel
And so much more that I don't even feel like listing right now.

I could write an essay on how much of a piece of shit game ME1 is
>>
>>386410401
>>386411885

This is why I wanted Andromeda to be good. Unfortunately it isn't.
>>

It's not about the game, it's about the universe they created in that game.
It's easily the best sci-fi universe out there.

You find terrible roleplaying with placebo outcomes fun? You find horrible morality systems fun? You find a generic and safe sci-fi premise fun? You find bland, barely functional rover gameplay with copypasted worlds fun? You find limp-dick guns with no feedback fun?
You find linear %boosting skill trees fun?
>>
>>386414562
I understand and agree with every point besides the dialogue wheel. What's wrong with it?
>>
Mass effect 2 is better in every way. The meme that ME1 is an RPG and 2 isn't is retarded. The only thing ME1 has that 2 doesn't was a clunky inventory screen.
>>
>>386414869
i enjoyed the writing as well as the universe that was created inside the games itself

>>
>>386414898
They had different atmosphere. I won't say ME2's was worse, but it was different enough that people expecting it to feel like ME2 with better gameplay were disappointed.

The best way I can describe it is that ME1 felt like an 80s sci-fi movie, while ME2 felt like an early 90s action movie. Both good, but not the same atmospheric vibe at all.

>i enjoyed the writing
Generic, safe and plagiarizing. There's nothing unique about ME1's premise that hasn't already been done in countless other media.
>the universe that was created inside the games itself
What the fuck does this even mean? Buzzwords are not an argument.
>you seem to enjoy shooting generic husks over and over in a corridor
If it's fun, sure. Only the SP has corridor shooting, the meat of the game --which was ME3MP-- isn't a corridor shooter.

You should deepen your pool of game knowledge before you try to argue that ME1 is better than ME3, because objectively ME3 has more over ME1. Perhaps you should stop bandwagonning and realize "babby's first wrpg" isn't as good as you think.
>>
>>386415361
This thread was talking about sci-fi rpg's, post apocalyptic sci-fi rpg's are much better anyway. You don't need space when you already have alien creatures like giant scorpions, wanamingo's, Deathclaws and FEV mutants.
>>
>>386415430
>The best way I can describe it is that ME1 felt like an 80s sci-fi movie, while ME2 felt like an early 90s action movie. Both good, but not the same atmospheric vibe at all.

ME1 was The Terminator

ME2 was Terminator 2: Judgment Day

ME3 was Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
>>
>>386415430
At that was intentional. Bioware said rhey wanted ME2 to be like the Empire Strikes Back to the first game. It was suppose to feel darker than ME1. The atmosphere in ME2 was still pretty damn good.
>>
>>386415771
Also Alien vs Aliens.
Both good movies but different vibes to them.

ME3 was Revenge of the Sith
Andromeda was the Holiday Special

We need a good space RPG, something where you start out as a newfag pilot and you gotta work your way from the ground up. No MMO bullshit, keep it single player.
