I want to stream myself on twitch.

What should I do at the very beginning when I don't have any viewers or subscribers? Do random people look for streams with zero viewers just to check them out?

Is it important to show my face? How long should I stream before I add a face cam?

Twitch is a website where you watch people playing video games or other people watch you playing video games. What board is more appropriate?
>>
Try talking to other streamers, I can't remember what's it's called but they can "host?" You... that and just plug away. Keep it going each day and talk to people. Streaming like any other job, yes job if you want to do more than play games. You need to put in 40+hours a week.
>>
>>386407917
>What should I do at the very beginning when I don't have any viewers or subscribers?
Play games you enjoy.
>Do random people look for streams with zero viewers just to check them out?
Not really.
>Is it important to show my face?
Yes.
>How long should I stream before I add a face cam?
Can't think of any reason not to have one on day one if you want to use one.

Twitch is so weird to me , I just can't understand the popularity of streaming over pre recorded.
Streaming means you have to be there , pre recorded allows people to watch it on their own time and stop and rewind and skip ahead.

I never watch streams that's why it's hard for me to relate. But I know it's gaining on Youtube big time.

Having a facecam is a huge help, but in the end what matters is being original. New streamers like DrDisrespect are gaining tons of viewers simply because they're different from all the others. Basically, don't be yourself, because you're fucking boring. Be someone who you would want to watch.
>>
>>386412516
b-but im watching videogames
>>
I wanna stream but just to like 5 people. Not for donations or anything, just for the feeling of someone enjoying watching me playing games no mic or face cam or donations or subs or whatever
>>
I'd imagine it's really just based on luck, real life rng

if you're lucky, somehow youll amass viewers without trying

otherwise you'll ride the 0 viewer train for about a year then maybe get 40 or so followers

unless you got titties, titties change everything
>>
>>386412728
Then open up Skype and play some games
>>
>>386411965
Well to live of it, you only have to have 10x that.
>>
>>386407917
i'll tell you what not to do. dont call out someone in your viewer list when they just join your channel. sometimes i just want to lurk without saying anything or being called out by name. wait for them to say something first.
>>
>>386412765
Don't have anyone to stream to haha
>>
>>386412591
You shouldn't. People are allowed to pay for whatever content they like. That's why the free market exists.
>>
>>386412817
Get friends. You may have to go outside or use Facebook or something.
>>
>>386412591
you're obviously doing something wrong. whether it be making bad quality content, not appealing to a broad enough demographic to reel in people who are willing to support what you're making or you don't have enough marketing/advertisement for your material thus not bringing you any new people in

if you enjoy something enough to want to pay for it and support the producer of it, all the power to you. nobody is forcing you to pay for their services that are all available for free
>>
do what I do

play games that absolutely nobody like and just invite friends to watch you, so this way you only have your friends to talk to and nobody else

getting a big stream to somehow host you by sucking their dick/being good friends is huge

>>
>>386411417

>having friends
>>
If you're starting out you need to boost your viewer count so other people will come in. Either get your friends to watch or at least have your stream open or, barring that, view bot. Despite what some will try to tell you it is VERY prevalent among anyone who got big.

went from 0 to 500+ followers, getting ~30 concurrent viewers per stream. on a good night i'm gaining 100+ followers a stream, on a bad night i gain 20 to 30.

it is very easy to grow quickly on twitch:
1. stream the same game, don't spread yourself over 20 different games you suck at, play 1 you're fucking good at.
2. get a cam and a mic. seriously i don't know why the fuck people even bother if they don't have any gear. also get a good overlay and make sure your shit looks professional.
3. (most important) don't be ugly or fat

sorry, even if you're not a girl you still have to be presentable for camera. if you're fat and ugly, you shouldn't even be considering streaming on twitch, go to the gym and lift and get in shape and get your fuckin' priorities in order. your audience is going to be primarily male, and while they aren't viewing you to jerk off to your cleavage, most people still don't want to look at a fat uggo.

i've been streaming for about a month btw, didn't mention that.
>>
>>386407917
You should have a face cam right away. Show people you're taking this shit seriously so they know they can tune in again some time. Have a schedule, stick to it, and put it in your description.
Any time someone follows you should stop playing, replace the whole screen with facecam, and say some catch phrase welcoming them. Twitch viewers love this shit, makes them feel famous.
The catch phrase is the most important part. Workshop it and test it out before using it for real. You cannot change it once you've done it live once, that's lame as shit. If you don't establish your brand now you will NEVER make money off of this.

Once you get sub button do it for subs and just mention followers until you're getting hundreds of followers a day.
If by Christmas you're not making > $1000/month just quit, it's not worth the time or energy.

depending on what you're watching, it's more fun to watch in real time

Have a personality that's entertaining and people will watch you. It's that simple. If you have a boring personality, then use your friends with actual funny personalities as crutches and only stream with them. If you have no friends and no personality, then go pro at a video game. People like watching pros play video games.

Those are the easiest ways to get a following on Twitch. Good luck, OP!

>mega maker

i didn't say they're a key to success, i said they're popular. you're really only hurting yourself by not having one.

sure, you can still become successful without one, but if you're serious about it, and you're just starting out, you have no reason not to use the tools available to help you grow.

plenty of people who are mediocre at video games get popular too, but it probably would have been easier for them to get big if they were actually good.

If you're trying to stream to make it "a thing" and so worried about results you probably won't keep up with it or you'll need to be utterly desperate and viewbot and never shut the fuck up on the microphone and hustle every god damn person 24/7.

Just don't stream at like 2am and make sure you're not going AFK for a long period of time. Streams that are inactive never get momentum. People tune in and just drop out.
>>
>>386407917
I have heard successful streamers answer these questions.

Basically:
-Talk. Commentary is what people come to streams for.
-Have fun. No one wants to watch someone play a game they don't like
-Face cam. Streams with face cams are more popular on average.

The reality is don't bother. The vast majority of viewers watch the top 100 streamers. Unless you are getting pimped by a large streamer, you will most likely not succeed.

I sometimes wish I started streaming back in JTV days. I used to watch streams back then and always thought of doing it. I really regret not getting into it.

300-500 viewer average strimmer here, started a year and a half ago because I lost my job and had my rent paid out 6 months ahead with 20k in the bank. I had my friends watch the stream so I had a good 10-15 people that were actually talking in the chat, and got like 30 viewbots. It was enough to get my stream on the top row on most of the games I played so people clicked me and I grew from there. Probably hard to do now though since twitch cracked down on the viewbots in the past 6 months.

>>386413506
this is solid advice but you don't need to make people feel too special, it comes off as cringey if you push it too hard. I only facecam during a prestream and when I take a break between games. It pushes you out there as a person but the people that stick around for the games get to just watch the game.

Personality is paramount, if not that then you need skill. If you don't actually have a reason that people would want to watch your stream they will leave.
Schedule is important, you gotta be able to go 8-12 hours 5-7 days a week, especially when starting out, since if people stick around your numbers will tend to be higher on the back end of your stream than your front one, and that's when you pull in more followers.
Talking to chat is important, if people get a question answered or feel like they are a part of an open conversation they are very prone to sticking around.
Energy is super important, you have to be able to keep talking and stay engaged with both the game and your chat during the entirety of your stream, or people will leave.

There's some video that's like Destiny and Summit talking about streaming, it's several hours long but it is a perfect summary of streaming.

So, I'm a small time streamer myself (depending on what I'm streaming, I get anywhere from 3 to 30 viewers) and I have no schedule at the moment. Did you do any advertising/networking or was the act of streaming enough?

Also, would you recommend a consistent genre of gaming (I stream a lot of Metroid and the like, but I get the most views when I play fighting games where I have somewhat of a presence) or a lot of variety?

I was thinking of just speedrunning Super Metroid. I figure it doesn't even matter if I'm the best, I have a good amount of knowledge of the game to answer questions and show particular tips/tricks and have been told I am pretty entertaining to interact with as a streamer.

Aside from that, I get the feeling that the people who watch that kinda stuff are autistic to watch just about anyone doing it at least when the big names aren't streaming, like Zoast.

Zero advertising, networking with other streamers only happened after I hit like 300 viewers for the first time.
If you want to get big you either need to stream incredibly frequently and for long hours, or stick to a schedule.
I usually play some competitive game for 4-6 hours, then wind down with some RPG for 4 hours so I can chill and talk to chat. I made sure to make it clear to anyone that watched me early on that I don't only play one game, because a LOT of people only watch one game.
It sucked because I had like 500 viewers for a while playing one game, but when I switched off it I would drop back to like 100 viewers or less.It took a lot out of me seeing my viewcount drop like a rock but the game is dead now (top streamer now is getting probably like 100 views tops) and I built a bigger core viewerbase and now I hit 300-500 regardless of what I stream, sometimes breaking 1000 if I get a nice host or something.

>OP's question was already answered.

Some people have different viewpoints and don't have all the one-sided views like you. Open your mind a bit retard.

I see, cool. Honestly, it's all pretty obvious but it's nice to hear that dedication, consistency and being "watchable" are really all it takes. One more question if you don't mind, what kind of income can you expect from around that many views? I understand that it'll vary both from person to person and month to month, I'm just curious.

Yea because the only way to make something of your life is by playing video games for an audience

all twitch streamers do is for the interactivity, playing games at first seemed fun but then it becomes a job...a chore
they either quit or do it for the money
then you get the ones who do it to hear themselves talk, they dont care aboot the game since its just a paycheck

It's the only thing I know how to do.

I tried streaming once, more as a "I'm gonna play games and you can watch if you want" sort of thing, rather than trying to go full-time with it. That sounds like way too much work. I don't want to play the same video game all day every day just to get consistent viewers.

Playing flavor of the month is a terrible idea when you're a new streamer, it's only when you already have a respectable number of people watching that playing popular shit helps you. Nobody's gonna scroll all the way to the bottom through hundreds of other streamers to find you.

Income is wildly inconsistent but enough to get me by. I've pulled 6.8 grand in a month on a 430 average, and 770 in another month with a similar average (with the hours I put in that month I could have made almost 2.5 grand on minimum wage, so it wasn't like I didn't stream a lot that month). Sub money and adverts (which I've stopped running entirely at this point) give very little money, it's all about donations. You won't have anything stable in the way of subs until you are like a 3000+ concurrent streamer. Over the past 6 months my average wage would be about $2700 monthly

A lot of people are memers so I tried doing a music bot and a bunch of crazy donation shit, it was great at first and brought in a bunch of money, but it turned out negative in the end, so every other weekend on either sunday or saturday I basically turn off language filters and add a music player to the donation bot and I consistently get ~500 bucks on that day alone now.
I learned having that shit on the stream on the regular is a massive turn off that I had people messaging me on twitch saying it sucked, so I stopped doing it all the time and only run it once in a blue moon, and people appreciated it a lot more I feel. Give the people a chance to be funny when they know it's appropriate and they will tend to follow suit.

I've been happy with streaming now though, past 5 months have been an actual profit over my expenses so I'm not bleeding money anymore, and I'm gonna keep riding the streaming boat until it sinks.

Overlay or no?

I've been thinking about streaming but I don't know if people want larger game real estate but with a facecam blocking part of the screen or an overlay that keeps the two separated.

Less than 10, not really consistent. I just want more people to see it is all in case they are interested. I do solo practice until I find someone to netplay.

Keep it minimal, for the most part the only time you need a "big" overlay is if you're already getting up there in viewers and need it to promote your things such as contests/other pages that you are 90% sure people will go to since you have a fanbase.
>>
>>386412790

Uh, I'd say you need a lot more than 400 viewers to "live off" streaming, chief.

Why the fuck i cant find myself in the game list im streaming or my username in the search bar at all?

Not him but i can live out $5 in daily donations.
That is 20% more than the minimum wage where i live.
