Honestly playing it after P4 and P5 was a bad move. P3 is a fantastic game with the best OST and atmosphere of the Persona franchise, but plays really bad compared to what came after.
The whole not playing your party members was done so that they feel more like actual characters by the way.

Just don't play or watch it. Be content with your experiences in 4 and 5 and move on.

Remember that unlike P4 and P5, you don't really have to conserve SP because you can recover it for free at every checkpoint. Also, Ma- spells do not give you One More unless you down every enemy. So the order of the day becomes hitting weaknesses instead of spamming physical AoEs.

Also note that your teammates will prioritize stunlocking enemies so they shouldn't be attacking downed enemies.

Honestly I preferred P3 FES's mechanics.

Certain Social Links and quests from Elizabeth are tied to your character stats, as in you cannot progress or access certain things until you have stats high enough.

Basically, yeah. During the day you will generally progress Social Links or increase your character stats (Academics/Charm/Courage), during the evening you will go to Tartarus, progress character stats or increase a Persona's stats (Strength, Magic, etc.). There will also be a few Social Links which you progress in the evening too.

You'll have to balance all those out the best you can.

Yeah, I just downloaded the latest stable version they had available at the time and it was quite painless. Didn't read a guide or anything, messed a bit with the settings which made sense to me, like increasing rendering resolution and that's pretty much it. Had to download some PS2 BIOS, but that was easy to find with a quick search. Widescreen hacks are a bit weird but if you play P3FES NTSC version it should already be included in PCSX2 I believe.

first of all, i fucking hate p4 mc. i mean, all persona characters have some personality, p3 not talking and saying some weird shit, having weird/dark humor. persona 5 guy being show-off and a similar humor. while p4 main guy is just a guy, he is like neutral, doesn't make anyone mad, doesn't make shitty or dark jokes. and the rise was all over him, the fucking chad. so i couldn't feel like i was him.

about team, they were so goofy. i mean, persona 3 fucking build up a character for junpei. good shit. and i kinda liked that persona 3 team wasn't friends at first. they were together because they needed to. p4, someone joins the party and life goes on, he/she acsts like s/he was always a member. but lots of people liked this concept, so probably all persona team from now on will be best friends. kinda sad for me. and it is the most light-hearted game. someone you didn't know dies, a girl you saw for 10 mins dies etc. i felt like nothing important happened, so ending couldn't hit me either. still, with new shit added with golden, it was fun with like most content of any persona game. still, even with content of p4g or how well p5 is, persona 3 is my favorite.

Persona 3 in a nutshell. The stuff that is terrible is terrible, the stuff that is great is top-tier.
Persona 4 in it's own way sorta just evened out everything. It took what was bad in Persona 3 IE the battle system and party social links and made them good but then in return the social links in general were shit-to-average
Persona 5 is just a stepped-up Persona 4 in that regard.

It's less the Personas themselves and more the arcana and level, you can usually work it out from there to find something specific. Just google "Persona 3 fusion chart"

In general though you shouldn't be relying on one skill, the games are built to be switching around and utilising different styles for different battles.

Skill inheritance is random, although some skills have a higher chance of passing on to the persona depending on their affinities.
Usually getting a good skill set means deselecting and selecting the personas you want to fuse until the skills displayed are to your liking.

He's very obviously the silent loner type from the start, however the game requires you to be a social outgoing butterfly so those sorts of similarities soon stop outside the snarky banter dialogue options.

His actual character trait is being Jesus. It's hard not to like a guy who's willing to die for everybody else. Thanatos is also just a very cool persona and it's iconic with him. Seriously, Protag and Joker simply had sleek and stylish signature Persona designs while MC's were more unsettling, but unique.

Also when you very strongly relate to a social link, you also end up self-inserting that much more into the P3 MC. While Persona 3 has a few misses, some of the social links literally give perspective on life and feature tragic melancholic characters. You empathize strongly with the confidant, but in doing so you embed yourself into the MC's role that much more.

Which is also one of the reasons people meme on Protag and call him a Chad. His storyline was far less serious, he himself seemed way more cool from the outset, and his social links were in general more shallow.

The reason is the movies change certain parts about the story and rush through or entirely skip the little things like social links and the time between bosses, especially in the last two movies. If you're playing in an emulator then just use a small exp cheat to get the monthly grind over with quickly.

I feel like improving the tactics system would've been better for the sequels than just removing it, because no other persona game has ever fept as personal to me since it switched from having you play as "the transfer student" to "the entite investigation team" or "the phantom thieves." It also just makes the daytime segments where you only control the protag, the fact that only the mc can swap personas, and the game overs when the protag dies just seem stupider. I feel like they should fix all of these if they aren't going to try for having you just be one party member anymore.

i just got to walk around tarturas when i want so nothing to bring up yet. on p3p i could look/use my party members skills from the menu, can i not so that here? i click skills and it only shows mine with no way to scroll down to yukari or junpei, same with looking at them in the status screen.

OP here, have been playing off and on a bit today, and am still not having a lot of fun with the combat. Got to floor 10 and I'm not doing a whole lot of damage to the 3 hands. Googling told me most people fight them about lvl 10, but I'm only lvl 6 or so and gaining EXP is hard because most enemies only drop 4-5 EXP. What should I do?

Set Yukari and Junpei to target the same hand, use a Bash attack to knock the three down, but don't use all-out attacks, then keep beating the hand everyone's targetting until it's dead. Then do the same with the next, keeping the others knocked down no matter what. Use this strategy for any boss that's multiple enemies that have weaknesses.

Yes, the exp gain in portable was massively boosted in the first block. In FES, you're lucky if you beat the first block at level 8. In P3P you can easily get to 15 like you said with just some grinding.

Definitely not, with the low ass exp gains you get, you're better off relying on exp boost when fusing. Rank 3 on a social link gets the new persona two levels right off the bat. You can think about grinding once the fourth party member joins.

The maps, no, I'm afraid. You'll have to rely on your memory as you go through them. As for gold shadows, you need to catch them from the back. But the literal back, any bit from the side and they'll notice you. They always have advantage and may run on the first turn.

There's a trick in FES to shadows turning. If you pause and unpause, the shadow will turn and advance in another direction. You can keep pausing and unpausing until they're facing away from you. If you run to a high ground, they will lose sight of you but you can still hit them for easy player advantages.

They're supposed to be hard to catch because they drop really good stuff. If you use a bow you can hit enemies from farther away.
As for the map I think you're stuck with the minimap.

To me what Turn based games excel at is that next to RTS's they are the best way to control multiple characters at once. So taking that away I feel defeats the point of it being turn based.

If you have the patience and there's a particular persona you want, you can go in solo and grind. I really like having Jack Frost for the first full moon boss, but getting to lv 8 before that can be pretty hard.

Yeah, it can be pretty brutal. My recommendation is avoid enemies, reach the next terminal, then go back and train/get items/new personas until everyone's tired. You'll have to return a few times for sure.

I've beaten hard twice, but only for the sake of saying I've beaten hard mode. Later on it's not as bad but the early game Tartarus bosses are hell. Full moon bosses are really easy.

No, the great mood is specific for some characters on specific days. Everyone will be "fine" most of the time. They take a day or two to recover from "tired" or "sick".

You're still controlling multiple characters, just in a different, less precise way. The whole point of P3's mechanics is to make it feel like you're one person commanding the team instead of playing as the entire team like other RPGs. If you play properly it works well most of the time and the result is the same as what you would have done anyway, though it does occasionally fall flat.

The arcade is very powerful on the first few days since most enemies have stats that don't go past 4 or 5 and the arcade gives you 3 points to either STR, MAG or AGI, meaning three visits make you much stronger than them
