It is stupid as fuck. I'd honestly recommend leaving gems in easy levels like N. Sanity Beach and Boulders and going back and getting them when you find a level you get stuck on so you can save then.

Yeah Native Fortress is a bit of a spike. If you don't have the gem for it yet I'd strongly recommend going back to one of the levels I mentioned so you don't have to keep replaying them, once you get back to it of course.
