A vast majority of OW characters are either tropes that have been done hundreds of times before (a stereotypical samurai, an intelligent monkey, a fat bruiser, a grizzled cowboy, a hacker with counterintuitive glowing clothes, etc.) or just fapbait. Not saying Bethesda characters are even close to being as good, but people really overestimate the quality of Blizzard characters.

First of all it's a big gamble, if you can't make an attractive title you're basically fucked considering the development cost of modern games. This probably wouldn't be a problem for established brands such as Valve though.

Secondly, even if you hit it out of the park and a lot of people buy your game initially, the window of income is pretty short - especially nowadays when the attention span of the industry is so short. Just think of all the overhyped games that have come and gone just recently.

Multiplayer games might not kick off as strong as a good singleplayer title, but the window for income can be much longer and more stable. Companies like stability, to calculate monthly costs and income rather than a huge explosions of income followed by nothing.
