There's Eva games for PSP that were more life-sims, but they did have combat if you played as a pilot or commander. Apparently, if you played as a non-combatant, it was possible for NERV to lose battles for reasons completely outside of your control, fucking over your ability to play the storyline you're supposed to follow.

1.0 was a pretty straight remake of the first 6 episodes. 2.0 was 8-19 with heavy changes like the introduction of Mari (new girl who's done fuckall to justify her inclusion so far), having Asuka pilot the Eva unit that gets infected by an Angel instead of Toji and ending with Shinji causing (partial) Third Impact during the fight with Zeruel. 3.0 is just a fucking mess.

Part of the problem is terminology and confusion.

People will just say 'worse animation' but a lot of modern animation looks fine purely from the animation department. The problem is often the art assets themselves. DB super is a great example. While the early seasons retreading the movie stuff did legitimately look terrible in every regard a lot of people are defending the animation now. The problem is that while the animation is improved the art design is still horrid, with poor lighting and awful character models.
