It's a little more complicated than that if you look under the surface. Most civilians seem to be relatively content with their lives and it's made clear, again and again, that the Nazis effectively achieved a world peace that BJ's completely undoing. Yeah, the way I see it is:
Doom 1, Doom 2, Doom 64, he stays in hell forever, gets trapped by demons since killing him just brings him back to hell.
Doom 3 happens while he's trapped, played by an unrelated space marine. You even have a room near the end called Tomb of the Hero, with a big sarcophagus in the middle, likely the one with OG doomguy still inside.
Doom 4 happens with doomguy being released.
What I said about being an arch angel was because the game added the idea of God and angels helping doomguy, which kinda muddled the idea. I prefer the idea that hell is real but no one ever thinks of heaven as being real. Maybe because it doesn't fit the imagery. Just a incredibly pissed off guy that refuses to stop killing demons, and since he's nothing but a killing machine, he just respawns back where he left off, which is why they trapped him instead.

The game would have been better if its level design wasn't so fucking bipolar. At times it's like F.E.A.R., where you throw grenades to distract or stun nazis while flanking them with double shotguns as they're distracted, but usually it's Call of Duty where you have to play popamole behind chest-high walls with hitscan enemies everywhere and often going through whatever cinematic moment the developers thought was fun and engaging. Like vehicle sections and facestabbing nazis with knives.
