I have a friend who works for one of those big start-up companies whose commercials you hear all the time in podcasts. He gets paid six figures and was able to pay off all of his student loans within two years, along with all of the perks he gets at the office like free lunches and video game breaks.

It's heaven for about a year, but then he started digging into the shitty things the company would do to trick customers into paying more money (making the UI deliberately hard to use if you want to cancel your account, etc). It gets pretty demoralizing pretty quickly if you've ever stayed at a major job for longer than a few years, especially if you also hate the shitty underhanded business practices that video game companies follow (bloated microtransactions, false advertising, etc). Much like animation (from what I've heard, personally worked in games for a few years), I only recommended it if you're really, REALLY passionate about it.
You will get shafted, a lot of the creative control will be out of your hands, a lot of shitty people will make shitty decisions on your behalf... but that doesn't mean you can try your best at what is available to you.
It was gruelling, overtime the majority of the time, crunch, etc... but at the end of the day you just wanna see what you put your hard work into come to fruition, and deliver and end product that you know will satisfy the end customer.
I left shortly after the my first and only big project because a lot of my co-workers either left, or were laid off. It sucked, drained my morale, and I wasn't sure if I would be able to go through with it again with new, unknown people.

For as long as I can remember, the video game industry has been regarded, from the perspective of a programmer, to be a bad choice of employment. Shit pay, shit hours, shit benefits etc. Smart people who want to have a life and a family have always avoided it. Only starry-eyed "but I wanna work on vidya games!" types are duped into entering it. This is not new.

Because I work in real IT.
Tech-wise it's much more interesting (cloud storage).
Payment is much better. And I'd rather earn enough to buy games that I want than get game I worked on for free.
People are more socially adjusted.
Social benefits and job market in general is great. Bosses cannot treat you like a shitstain.

Fun fact. I know a girl that works in IT and supports her boyfriend who works in gamedev. It's quite sad to hear how he asks her to buy games for him.
She works 8h per day while he constantly does extra hours.

Yeah CS is so fucking shit. It's the same problem as pretty much every other degrees though. They go way too far into advanced theory and only offer basic general applied skills. It's like they're only teaching to make post-doc students, and not for real-life jobs.
