Why aren't you working in a video game industry? You can have lazy bags, pinballs and free pizzas in your office!

I want to keep my brain and the remnant of my self-love and integrity.
>>
I'm white.
>>
>>386334212
They get these things because most of the time they work hard on games. (Really depends what studio) During the breaks they're allowed, they should have a good time and good food.
>>
I'm a straight white male. There's no place for me in the industry.

They get those things because the company never wants them to leave work.

EA has gyms and tennis courts and shit in their buildings. Their ideal situation is that you sleep under your desk during crunch time so that you're not dividing your attention between home and work.

I used to.. Switched to corporate software development because of the following reasons:
Better project management, meaning I don't have to spend too long at office and can work 8 hours a day, because everything is actually done with achievable schedules..

Far better salaries for easier jobs

Still get all the same benefits and more than working on games development.

>mfw when we have lazy bags, our own beer tap, as much free lemonade/juice/coffee/tea you can drink, we have parties with free alcohol at office every weekend, and the co-workers are awesome.
>>
>>386338054
>as much free lemonade/juice/coffee/tea you can drink
That's actually such a bad idea. That stuff will kill you. I'd totally provide as much free water as employees want to drink, though
>>
>>386338054
>and the co-workers are awesome.

This is the only part that I doubt. I know the type, and they're not fun to hang out with. It's the reason I switched from CE to IE.
>>
>>386336890
>ever needing to crunch.

It is always bad project management whenever crunches happen. It has proven that crunch is more expensive and less efficient as when you pass certain amount of hours per day you become way less efficient.

You should always leave plenty of extra time for finetuning and fixing things at the end of a project, while at the same time avoiding feature creep.

>Finetuning and fixing in the same sentence

Willing to bet the only crunch going on is QA to try and figure out what isn't working exactly so the developers can actually get it fixed and deliver for once, just so non-QA testers can get it. Release is "finished" but there's weeks of closed testing still scheduled so go figure.

>>
>>386334212

I have a friend who works for one of those big start-up companies whose commercials you hear all the time in podcasts. He gets paid six figures and was able to pay off all of his student loans within two years, along with all of the perks he gets at the office like free lunches and video game breaks.

It's heaven for about a year, but then he started digging into the shitty things the company would do to trick customers into paying more money (making the UI deliberately hard to use if you want to cancel your account, etc). It gets pretty demoralizing pretty quickly if you've ever stayed at a major job for longer than a few years, especially if you also hate the shitty underhanded business practices that video game companies follow (bloated microtransactions, false advertising, etc). He's getting about ready to jump ship and maybe work as a contractor instead.

It's not all sunshines and rainbows.

That's cool, but that's still not awesome in any way. That's just a normal, positive aspect of life.
>>
>>386338456
It's still wrong mentality to crunch at all. In agile projects you should use agile testing, which means the testing is ongoing and the quality is baked into the project.

This would mean you have no need to crunch, can release in time while working normal work hours.
>>
>>386335308
Too bad it isn't realistic (outside of like a lucky 0,000002%) to make the jump from "In college for a diploma" or "In university for a degree" all the way up to "Upper management" or "Shareholder/owner".
NEET being above anything must be a joke. Self employed / freelancer has too many risks to be viable for most people.

So like 99% of the population will end up wagecucks.

All the shitty stories of crunch hours, shitty management and the chance that you'd be laid if you don't ship a specific number of copies makes me not wanna be in that industry

I see so many developers just looking too tired and dead in interviews and I've seen some here say they just take it easy.
>>
>>386340149
Just apply for social security and you will get a lot more money. Of course it all depends on where you live.
>>
Much like animation (from what I've heard, personally worked in games for a few years), I only recommended it if you're really, REALLY passionate about it.
You will get shafted, a lot of the creative control will be out of your hands, a lot of shitty people will make shitty decisions on your behalf... but that doesn't mean you can try your best at what is available to you.
It was gruelling, overtime the majority of the time, crunch, etc... but at the end of the day you just wanna see what you put your hard work into come to fruition, and deliver and end product that you know will satisfy the end customer.
I left shortly after the my first and only big project because a lot of my co-workers either left, or were laid off. It sucked, drained my morale, and I wasn't sure if I would be able to go through with it again with new, unknown people.
>>
>>386339830

Apart from the horrible typos, I don't consider being stuck at home with only media and depression to entertain you true freedom. I mean I work a casual job anyway so yeah I'm generally home and free to vidya 2-3 days a week, work breaks up the monotony another 2-3 days, then the weekends I have money to actually go out and do shit with friends (generally tabletop games before you try to accuse me of being a normie), and THEN I still have money to travel and shit. Again, people are ignoring that functionally speaking Poland is barely first world, the government had to lower taxes in order to attract foreign investors and it also made it so there is no minimum wage, so Polish people in "normal" jobs earn the equivalent of €4/500 a month, which is why many factories outsource there.
You CANNOT compare Poland with the fucking US, Witcher 3 in the US would have costed twice because that.

At my workplace we have arcade machines (currently a refurbished Asteroids and a Neo Geo with 10 games in it). two TV's, half a dozen massage chairs, two TVs, and a 9-5:30 Barista. Whenever things get stressful, they bring in a professional masseuse, pizza (or sandwiches, or BBQ, or whatever is the most requested food)...but unfortunately taking an employee up to one of the Quiet Rooms to fuck is a privilege for only one or two of the senior managers.

I think part of the problem is that video game development is full of guys who were like "I wanna make video gaemes!! for a living" kids who thought it would be fun and not real work and then grew up and realized it's a shitty job like any other. Then those workers who are decent or bootlicks get promoted eventually to leads and project managers, but at their heart they're still lazy kids who never had a firm grasp of how much work is involved in task x or task y in the first place.

I can honestly say that I've become a much better person in the last two years that I've gone NEET. Got into shape, got a renewed interest in PC hardware, and even started learning Russian and Latin in the last few months. I would not have had the time, energy, or patience to jog 3 miles every morning and spend the rest of the day reading/practicing whatever the hell I want, whenever the hell I want, if I still had to commit to a full-time job.

>You say that

No, it's not just something that you say. It's something that you do. It's something that men do every day, and have always done. It's not just some abstraction, like how we're talking about it now. For some men, your friends become so deeply rooted in who you are that there is no questioning stuff like this. You don't understand, because you haven't lived it. You don't know true friendship, so you can't know. And that's how some will live their lives, like you do yours, for a multitude of reasons. I do think your life is poorer for it, but I don't think it necessarily needs to be poor because of it. But do try to understand that the word "friend" may mean something else to others than it does to you.

I'm glad you've found a woman to spend your life with. That's equally important.

It depends a bit on where you live and what opportunities are available. I can definitely recommend volunteering though. You can start out doing it maybe one or two days a week, and it's kinda nice to be outside the house doing something a bit productive. You might also have some pleasant coworkers whose company you enjoy. And if you don't like it, you can quit fairly easily.

Take a look around online and see if anything piques your interest! They might very well need your help.

Reading all these testimonies about the work environment and the general amount issues you have to deal with is disheartening.

The stories about the general work environment are becoming more and more widespread, potentially repelling new qualified candidates. I've read a significant portion of senior staff are leaving the industry these days. This perception of working in the video game industry as being some kind of sanctuary for creativity is evaporating, rapidly.

What's even more demoralizing is how the industry attempts to keep a lid on the amount of lay-offs and people leaving.

Not to mention if you're placed in perpetual crunch time for more than just a few months at a time.

http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=31624

> The problem isn’t the physical challenge. It’s the time, and the staggering personal opportunity cost. Your daughter is never going to take her first steps again, say her first words again, or any of the other milestones we use to mark the road of parenthood. There’s always another videogame to make, but there’s not always a kid to raise, a spouse to love, or friends to hang out with. Missing out on that stuff is the real cost of eternal crunch mode, and no review score or game credit can ever offset it.

Incidentally, the writer never worked for a video game company, even though he worked for a software company in the late 90s.

These are salary positions. You get paid a fixed amount every one or two weeks regardless of hours put in.
>>
>>386347508

In all fairness, the vast majority of service jobs are absolutely redundant and could be fixed with either better management or basic automation.

You're only contributing to society if your job has value. You could have a job and still be a net leech on society, to be absolutely brutal about it. A lot of people get paid to do barely work more than a NEET, and the actual value they provide is questionable at best.

A good example is an uncle of mine who works with the mentally ill about two days a week. All he does is sit around, drink coffee and occasionally tell one of his clients they need to clean their room. He works two days a week but makes more than most people working 40 hours. Thanks to the union, he's also practically impossible to fire and undoubtedly costs more than the value he produces.

He's happy with it and it provides him a sense of meaning, but it's not exactly productive.

Why do people care about contributing to society and place so much value on it?

My ultimate value has always been preserve number 1. I dont give a fuck if what I do doesn't contribute to society or even if it worsens it, if it gives me the power (Aka funds) to enjoy my life and live it how I want to live it, free of control, then why should I care about society?

I genuinely dont understand why so many people feel this obligation of community service

Selfishness only makes sense for people who have successfully isolated themselves from the consequences. It's the highest form of privilege to say "I need nobody, I care about nobody"

Unless, of course, you are an selfish AND poor, and therefore an idiot. In which case nature will take care of you pretty soon, so is a non issue.
>>
>>386349019

My boss does this. I've gotten short changed a number of times, when he was supposed to be paying overtime. Tried going to HR about it and they just said "well you're mistaken. Your overtime pay is carrying over into the next paycheck".

It didn't carry over.
>>
>>386348485

I can understand empathy, like you see a dude on the street with a dog, and you think fuck man he's probably hungry and the dogs hungry, I'll buy him a sandwich or a coffee or something

But society at large? Its so big it doesn't know you exist, and mostly is just there to get in your way and limit you

>Cant drive a car without paying roadtax
>Cant earn a wage without paying the salaries of shit police services filled with systematic racism
>Cant even buy a product with your own money without paying VAT to line some out of touch politician's pocket, while they slash the funding going to public health services and give themselves bonuses

Shit like that just makes me, I dunno, not feel empathy for society? Care about your friends and family, but everyones basically out for themselves.

But this is my point

If I make good money, live in my own space, enjoy life, I "Take part" in society by buying goods and products and services and whatnot, but my means of generating income isn't really "Beneficial to society"

Say I'm an entertainer, or an artist, or someone who trades stocks and retires young. Im not producing anything of worth, I'm not putting money back in, I've just taken money out that I've earned and Im content to enjoy myself

Is that "Wrong"?

Like look at streamers. Some of them are millionaires, and yet people tell them to get "Real jobs" and not be such a leech on society. Why should they? Whats the motivation

>The stories about the general work environment are becoming more and more widespread, potentially repelling new qualified candidates. I've read a significant portion of senior staff are leaving the industry these days. This perception of working in the video game industry as being some kind of sanctuary for creativity is evaporating, rapidly.
For as long as I can remember, the video game industry has been regarded, from the perspective of a programmer, to be a bad choice of employment. Shit pay, shit hours, shit benefits etc. Smart people who want to have a life and a family have always avoided it. Only starry-eyed "but I wanna work on vidya games!" types are duped into entering it. This is not new.
>>
Because I work in real IT.
Tech-wise it's much more interesting (cloud storage).

People are more socially adjusted.
Social benefits and job market in general is great. Bosses cannot treat you like a shitstain.

Fun fact. I know a girl that works in IT and supports her boyfriend who works in gamedev. It's quite sad to hear how he asks her to buy games for him.
She works 8h per day while he constantly does extra hours.

Middle school and high school history and/or english. That's what I'm going to be eligible to teach with my degree.
Districts can't try to saddle me with the little bastards in elementary school even if they tried.

Middle schoolers are shitheads but I enjoy dealing with them. High schoolers are a lot easier but I can't help troubled students nearly as much because they're kinda fucked if they're still troubled by the time they get to highschool.

>>386356062
What papers are they marking in the middle of fucking summer? Grades need to be locked in like a week after school ends literally everywhere I've ever been. Every grade level.

I, like everybody who is going through education to teach, has a shitload of hours in the classroom teaching and interacting with teachers long before I actually finish school.

Taxes arent the reason working people run the economy. It's the relationship between producer and consumer that the economy runs, corporations don't make money out of thin air hence one of the biggest expenses is payroll.
When you consume without paying anything back, you arent living for free, the cost is externalized as someone else is laying for it.

You're paid what you agree to. If you choose an unpaid internship its your own fault. If you cannot find a single job that suits your skills then what you are asking is more than what you are worth. You call me blue pill but you have this very liberal idea that all businesses are screwing everyone over at once rather than just paying (often) a calculated equilibrium of wage:laborsupply.

If you have a shitjob then get a new one, if theyre all shit to you, then you're not worth a better job yet.

It is a meme. The degree only gets you into the applicants' pool. You're gonna need an internship or an impressive (good enough that you think to yourself, "heh, yeah they'll like this bit" when going over it) portfolio along with passable interview skills to get a job. Don't be complacent -- remember, it's a competition.
>>
>>386361536
Literally exactly the same for me.
I was so fucking nerve wracked preparing for technical interviews, when the first place just gave me an easy personality interview and offered me a job with average pay I immediately leaped on it.

I know I'm supposed to keep jumping between new jobs to keep getting a higher salary, but honestly this place gives me a 5% raise every 6 months and I barely do any work and I'm made enough to buy a nice house and put a lot in retirement so fuck it. I'm comfy and the thought of going into an interview where my technical skills will actually be challenged is a living nightmare for me.

The thought of eating that delicious Brooklyn Style pizza with double sauce, double cheese and Pepperoni gave me the will to live for the next hour until it showed up.

And I might have been full-retard high but I still didn't tip the driver.

After I ate it I passed the fuck out and slept off the drugs.

Ageism has always been a thing. Funnily enough seniors have less powers than in the past because technology is moving so quickly that they are not able to catch up. You're doing it wrong. You need to either start your own shit (difficult) or find a job where the employer has some incentive to not fuck with their staff (hard, but less difficult). A good example is Actuarial work: FSAs/FCASs are in short supply (relative to every other labour market out there), and the work is highly specialized. Hence, decently high pay, good benefits and regular hours.

Ah well keep up the good work then, but do try to get as much experience as you can. Even a 3 months internship puts you miles ahead of school-only students.

Also diversify your langugaes and technologies. It's stupidly easy to do some small project with a new language to learn it and it helps a lot when searching for your first job.

If you can get C++, C#/Java, python and PHP, as well as experience with some tools like SVN/GIT, Jira and the likes, Agile/Scrum stuff, etc, on your CV you're pretty much guaranteed to at least get an interview.

and I kinda want to feel bad for him but he keeps calling me a loser because I live on welfare and doing small projects on github but he is so fucked I don`t even know
>>
why do in most wagecuck vs neetcuck image I AM SILLY tier you have the neetcuck saying that "he takes the time to study and do sport" when it's not like that at all in reality? why are neetcuck lying so much?
>>
>>386364896
but it`s true anon
>have all the time in the world while wage cuck faggots do your job for you
>do whatever you want
>decide to become better while at it
>>
>>386364575
I hope you're not planning on being the "concept artist". Not a lot of jobs out there for people like that. I'd train to be a texture artist if I was you, that's in demand and it's heavily reliant on fundamental art education. Pretty easy to learn the technical part of it, won't take you more than half a year.
>>
>>386364896
They think walking to the conveience store to buy Mountain Dew counts a sports and reading an article about scrotum hair on wikipedia counts as studying.
>>
>>386364989
His point was that NEETs don't do sport or study with their extra time, just play vidya. Although I have seen a lot of NEET anons learn Japanese with their time, but if it's just used for vidya/anime, is it really worth mentioning separately?
>>
>>386365031
In terms of art I do I do horror art.
I like to scare people.
I'm not to sure about what kind of job involving art I want yet.
For the moment I'm just going to do some basic two days a week job nothing too hard I just want to focus on making my art better while making money on the side.
>>
>>386365285
get on some indie horror game developer and make junji-ito inspired art
become the true hero we need but don`t deserve anon
>>

Where does the us military fit in on this list?
>>
>>386364989
but that's wrong
that's totally wrong
most NEET on 4chan don't do that
you CAN indeed, but nobody does. There's a reason that people are NEET, and it's absolutely not because the NEET said, one day, while in school "Yeah, i'm a man, i'm tired of society, i want to be free and become better by myself! I'm not gonna work, work is slavery! so i'm going to exploit the system to survive, and i'm going to improve my body and study hard alone!"
>>386365171
Seriously, a NEET can't even go to Japan with their small NEETbux so they are learning it for anime/vidya for sure.
>>
>>386365285
>I just want to focus on making my art better
Weren't you supposed to focus on that in the art school? Jeez. You should get yourself ready for a job in the industry ASAP and get in. Then you'll gradually build up your skills while at work.
>>
>>386365285
Not the guy you replied to but if you do want to be a concept artist, you should try getting freelance commissions as an illustrator for books (like the indieshit people put on amazon). It's very very very vaguely related to concept art, you can make money from it and build a portfolio too. You might want to put some feelers out to see if any shit horror writers need a good book cover.

Because living as a neet is immensely depressing as you have all the time in the world to do what you want but you dont feel like doing it because you want to look for actual prospects in life but again never do, so you sit at home all day wanting to do two different things but ultimately accomplishing neither

You're pretty bad to be honest. No offence, but you need 2-3 years of full time studies to get to the concept art level. Probably 4-5 years if you're doing it part time.

Cheers anon I get a lot of people asking for art from me.
And I imagine making some art for someone's shitty little book could be a good way to make some cash.

I have gotten better but I don't think I'm "there" yet theirs still a lot of art things I want to do.
Mainly I want to start learning how to do digital art as I've never done digital art before.

Being a NEET fucking sucks. All the time to do whatever I want, but no money to do it. I don't get NEETbux, maybe that makes it better. But seriously, when you only have like 5 bucks to your name, life becomes stale pretty fast. Can't even afford an MMO subscription to waste my life away with.

>Most teachers I know spent their summer marking papers

Most teachers you know are liars, or heavy procrastinators who only go in to either a) waste tax dollars doing nothing, or b) literally panning out doing a week's worth of work over the whole summer (which is also a), or c) have something other than being a teacher that they do at the school.

I've only ever signed an NDA once in my life, anon. I was 17 and doing a week's work experience in one of the Big 4. They didn't let me go near anything even remotely interesting, and yet I'm still legally not allowed to talk about any of the systems they use that are 'proprietary' (that includes silly things like custom VBA scripts in excel because that's work product and thus considered owned by the company). Anyone in any industry can be bent over with an NDA.

It's a delusion that crosses all entertainment industries, even when people aren't actually doing any of the creative part. Because people love making things to show others enough to sometimes do it free nobody involved in it should actually need to be treated or paid well unless they're a celebrity.
>>
>>386370668
Salaried people don't get overtime. You basically sign a contract that say "do the job for x$ per year". And then you pretty much don't have a say in how it goes.
