Do actual disturbing and gloomy horror games exist? I'

Most games I've played in the past that called themself "horror games" just turned out to be inane shooters that kill any atmosphere that might have been there. I want games that actually cause goosebumps. Ones that show true horror and despair. Yes, I'm aware that's edgy.

It's a visual novel, and it doesn't get gloomy and disturbing until the second half, but the first half is all build up that makes the second all that more disturbing and gloomy.

I'm hoping the Call of Cthulhu game goes this way. Apparently it draws from the tabletop RPG, though I confess I've never played it. I hope it ends up as something novel though, rather just a simple adventure game with intermittent spoops.

High budget horror game will never happen, RE7 was a meme that relied on jumpscare more than anything IMO.
You should actually look at low budget game and indie stuff because that's where you can hope to find what you want.

Just very unrealistic. When I made this thread, I was originally thinking about games that are depicting war in disturbing settings, fitting to the music I posted.

Plenty of horror games out there with no action. Literally no combat. Then you have plenty that while they have combat it isn't necessary to engage in it all the time like it is for say an FPS action game.

As for war with disturbing themes that show the true horror of war, well war is glorified in this culture. I can't see gaming ever doing this because (and I hate to say it) gaming is too immature of a medium to really depict this. You are just going to have to read books and watch movies for this. I doubt we will ever see a game like this.

I never played that game but yeah I have seen people mention that. I think the problem is though that it is kind of obnoxious for gaming to even attempt something like that since games heavily glorify war and shooting. Especially so going into the 2000's. I'm pretty sure you do plenty of fighting in Spec Ops like in most shooters so it just seems wrong to me for a game to even attempt to depict such things when games by their very nature have been all about making violence fun and feel cool. Not counting puzzle games and other non-violent genres of course.
