I challenge you /v/ to find an ending worse than this, it had the most anticlimactic out of nowhere ending I've ever seen.
>>
>>386274958
Man I played this game through so many times
I didn't care if the story was bad or not, I loved the little "hidden" stuff and the fact that you could draw your own shit. Story was ok at the time at least
>>
>>386275129
The story was okay, up till the ending.
>>
>>386275317
I can't remember what happened in the end, except that the Socks guy or whatever was the evil dude
>>
>>386274958
Wait this was the last game of the series?
>>
>>386275741
Entire game took place in some kids coma, the two main characters were stuff animals he won from the carnival before the crash.
>>
>>386274958
What is the ending?
>>
>>386274958
Play the Zero Escape series.
>>
>>386275998
Entire thing was a coma and the bad guy was trying to stop all this. They reveal absolutely nothing of why he's doing this until the very end.
>>
>>386275998
You kill the big bad attempting to kill the world only to find out that you're a part of some random fuck's coma dream and everything you did amounts to fucking nothing.
>>
>>386276119
He was trying to save the world arguing stopping him will kill everything, but doesn't go into details why.

>>
>>386276384
Being a dream is one of the stupidest plot twists you can do, let alone a fucking coma. It really didn't help they kept you in the dark about everything till the very last second of the game.
>>
>>386276505
Okay then, tell me how (you) would make a better buildup to the coma reveal.

>>386274958
Easy, admittedly the build up towards the final boss is incredible but once you actually beat him the game just kinda ends
>>
>>386274958
this was a really good ending for a very 1 dimensional type of story imo
hits you out of nowhere
>>
>>386276741
I would redo the story and not have the stupid coma in the first place.
>>
>>386276741
I wouldn't even bother with the coma because it's a stupid idea to begin with. I'd just go with some different twist. I don't know if it would good, but at the very least it would be better than a fucking coma.
>>
>>386276892
The coma is what made the game so memorable. At first glance, this is just some kiddie drawing game, but BLAMMO YOU'RE IN A COMA NOTHING IS REAL YOUR SISTER IS FUCKING SAD.
>>
The ending worked for me because from the start I decided to try and make the edgiest fucking character possible and everything I built was a monument to evil.

They really should have seen the fact that I was the one really trying to destroy existence from the start, fucking dumb dream creatures.
>>

The problem is that it would be impossible to give hints of a coma or none of this is real without being really cheap and ruining the game. This is clearly a fantasy world not like ours, how could you imply none of this is real without ruining it.
>>
>>386274958
Mass Effect 3
>>
>>386277203
exactly, you expect some kind of ending the rat eats your girlfriend for gods sake but no, after you beat the final boss the game ends on a crappy cliffhanger that you already kind of figured out by the time you get there
>>
>>386274958
Assassins Creed 3.
>>

>>
>>386277815
the topic game
>>
>>386277815
It's literally from the ending of the game. The ending is a drawn cinematic that shows how the kid got into his coma, and this frame is when he finally wakes up, thanks to the help of his imaginary friends.
>>
>>386277815
That's the boy who's coma you're in. Another issue with dream endings is that it ruins any attachment to the charaters, none of this was real and all that work was for nothing. It only really works in stories where you knew it was a dream the entire time.

It's such a shame since the first one had a cheesy but okay ending. And then we get this weird shit. Are there even any clues in the first or second game that indicate that it was all a dream?
>>
>>386278124
No, there really wasn't. Wilfre did mention a few times he's trying to save everyone by what he's doing, but never goes into detail.
>>
>>386278124
the game mentions "that night" a few times
>>
>>386278124
The kid who's coma you're in appears as a character near the beginning of the first game. He has complete memory loss, I think he only remembers his name. At the end of the second game, all of the "imaginary" characters fade away, and this character is the only one remaining, further hinting that this is the kid who's coma you're in.

The ending made me cry, confused, furious and feel ripped off all at the same time as I was watching it. Never have I felt such a range of negative emotions for any ending I've ever seen. It's so out of place and unnecessarily dark and completely disconnects you from the entire world you've been built up during the 3-year gap between the first game and the sequel.
The ending made me sad, but I was just fuming at how much of a cop-out it was. I felt like my whole time playing both games was utterly wasted

Late ass reply, sorry.
It was a really shitty excuse for a "heroic sacrifice" that could've been avoid if the characters had literally just stopped doing ANYTHING for five fucking minutes. (With the excuse for why they DO fuck shit up being that the companion characters just pulled a "OH SHIT THIS CHARACTER IS TRYING TO MAKE OWLS THE SUPREME RACE" excuse out of their fucking ass even though it's really obvious that the character they stop is trying to save the fucking world) It looks like it's implied that you actually manage to survive the ending until you unlock the secret postgame lore area and it's revealed that you actually die and there's an unbreakable timeloop anyways so literally nothing you do over the course of the game matters. (Not that it matters anyways, because the main character is ACTIVELY DETRIMENTAL to the plot and only serves as a device to accidentally fuck up and get bullied for it, and then not be able to fight back because he's canonically a mute.) There's a whole lot of issues with Owlboy's lore and story and gameplay as a whole, and the dumbass fucking devs don't help. I could right a whole fucking wiki about what a shitfest it is. The art's gorgeous, though.
As for Undertale, I feel like the lack of exploration of the various things you could do with literal fucking time travel was a huge wasted opportunity. The fact that the only route with a final boss that isn't just a glorified cutscene is genocide fucking blows, too. Seriously, neither Flowey nor Asriel can actually fucking kill you. Flowey's fight has SEVEN fucking checkpoints, and full 30 second sections where your health is actively prevented from dropping to 0 and you get a full heal and the end of each section like that, to boot.
>>
>>386278124
There was just the normal dude who wasn't a raposa, he was just a human

>Owlboy ending
Christ. Sounds like it's just an idiot ball storyline all the way through.
>Undertale
I don't care much about simple gameplay. Fetishising sodeep gameplay above all else is how you end up with Rimworld (worse than Dwarf Fortress because it prioritises DF style gameplay over the story). Undertale's gameplay at least does what it's meant to do, although it could be much better.

More explored time travel would have been interesting, but it wasn't the focus of the game and that's fine.

You're fucking stupid.
Coma-style endings only work if the game is VERY clear from the outset that the world is not real, so it can then explore the implications of something like that. Having the coma bullshit be a "twist" with hardly any foreshadowing at all is lazy, unsatisfying writing.

It's...okay, anon. Most of the gameplay is, fuck it, basically an interactive visual novel. I don't mean that in a bad way.

I dunno, man. I don't want challenge for challenge's sake, but when most of the game has had a fairly decent (though still fairly easy all the way through, to be fair) difficulty curve, having the difficulty just drop straight into "literally impossible to lose" territory is a massive waste of potential. The combined RPG/Bullet dodging stuff is a really great idea and it honestly sucks that Toby didn't do more with it.

honestly i still love the games, they were charming as fuck, the story was nice, characters were good, art and music were fucking orgasmic, the ending of tnc was bullshit yeah, but it wasnt god-awful, it couldve been played off a lot worse

There were like two pages of that out of 8126. The epilogue is still coming. I loved the ending fuck you.

Ignore the weak shitters. The games were mediocre but it was a fucking great ending. Playing that shit when I was 12 fucked me up so hard and made me think of story in video games so differently.
>>
>>386294267
Anon you are also weak if an "it was a dream" ending made you think of vidya "so differently"...
>>
>>386294267
Nostalgia goggles don't make the game better.

>the games were mediocre

Nostalgia googles don't make the game better sure but you can still like and remember a bad game fondly anon. No shame in liking the shit you like
>>
>>386294427
I literally said the game was mediocre, just that the ending was good since it genuinely is a bittersweet ending. It was the right thing to do but it had consequences, it fucked me up for a bit.

Is it the greatest writing of our time? Of course not, but for a game presented to kids I think it's a good and serious message.
>>
>>386294418
Not him but, it sorta works in vidya. Because you get to experience it so it was like it's your dream, but you're awake and it's just a character in the game having the dream instead.

The next chapter was honestly good, nothing impressive, but still good. It's just the ending that I hated.
>>
The ending to Firewatch was the biggest load of shit Ive ever experienced
>>
>>386294812
It doesn't, but it takes away all satisfaction from you just as if it was your dream. Maybe even worse because it's you and some character with a random tragic story now.
>>
>>386295038
It didn't do that for me. I just thought "huh, cool I guess". I didn't really connect with the story to begin with, though.
>>
>>386294979
"Go back to your wife."
No, fuck you.
You go deal with a human being who acts confused pretty much all of the time, acts like you're a stranger and forgets and remembers shit randomly.
What a bitch.
>>
>>386294793
Thanks anon. I do wish they were better but I won't lie to myself, they were just mediocre or above average at best. The thing though that makes this suck is that it does seem the developers genuinely cared about the game and wanted to make something great but just failed which is saddening.
>>386294947
I have to disagree but fair enough. I think that for a kids game it was a potent message and leaves a lasting impression. Maybe it was just me at the time but finishing the game has had a lasting impression on me, it really was the first time I finished a game and thought about what had just occurred.

>its not about the ending of a game that matters but the journey the players throught it that matters
>lol whole game is shit and not worth playing because of ending

Are you literally me anon? I hold the exact same opinions. The fact that I played this when I was a child and I drew everything made me so immersed in the game and this was probably the game that got me into vidya. The ending just stuck with me for a while and I'll always look back on this fondly while acknowledging it's flaws.
>>
>>386286929
It's just a shitty quality Youtube video. Genesis had some real shit soundtracks on it, but I don't think this is necessarily one of them.
>>
>>386295862
Good shit anon. I still have my copies of the games, complete with boxes and everything. I always say "maybe I'll try them for old time's sake" but never do. Honestly the memories they left on me is enough, I don't plan to ever get rid of them. Even if they're not important to me now the impression they left on me when I played them is always there.
>>
>>386296268
Same man. I can't start a new file cause their all filled and I can't bear to erase the avatar's I drew. It's sappy but keeping it like it was as I was a kid is precious to me, reminds me of a better time.

This is a game with a horrible ending
>random cheap nightmare sequence
>none of your past choices matter
>both of your 2 options make no sense
>dev literally says on twitter to "use your imagination"

>ruins any attachment
No it doesn't. Maybe in retrospect. But when the dream ending literally comes out of nowhere at the end, you can't seriously say "Now I know its a dream I hate these people! Nuh uh. Nope. I never liked these characters in the first place." You were invested enough to stay for that ending.
>>
Kek. You guys seriously complaining? Why do you idiots hate both of these games because of one games ending? Yeah it was a dream ending. Yeah those usaully suck. But like Where the Wild Things Are, Winnie the Pooh, and Inception; this game was the better exception. Maybe its because I wanted to be a psychologist when I first played it, or because I'm studying now; but I've always been a sucker for "outside events symbolise the dream world."
But if having a fake out ending is something you can't get past, I truely am sorry you don't have fun.

You go through all the bullshit only to have a boss fight that's a worse version of the Mr. Freeze battle in Arkham City. Then a completely worthless final battle that is a QTE and then the game just sorta ends.
