The leveling or rather the quests from 1-69 will be the most awful and slow grind you've ever seen in a "Triple A" MMO.

Once you get to 70, you can get "fullgeared" to experience the latest raid in less than a week.

In order to do the level 70 content, you have to clear the "Main Story Quest", which is literally over 300 quests that you're absolutely required to do.

And that's the reason why they're basically selling a potion that allows you to skip the quests from the base game and the first expansion.

You aren't allowed to access any of the expansion content until you've beaten the MSQ up to that point. For the newest content, assuming you don't buy a story skip, you'd need to have beaten 423 main story quests (each complete with 5 minute long cutscenes every 10 seconds with about 10 cutscenes per quest) and gotten to level 60.

You could feasibly buy the base game, play for two months straight, then buy the first expansion, play for another month, then buy the most recent expansion.

Otherwise, if you don't care about end game raiding or about playing one of the new classes, you're allowed to do anything else (dungeons, pvp, roleplay, playing the auction house)

Honestly, XIV is boring. This is coming from someone who has nearly 1400 hours invested. SB so far is pretty shit. HW was at least fun because a lot of the fights were unforgiving, and the difficultly was there for those that wanted it. SB is legit ridiculously easy. And there really isn't much to even do. It honestly felt like SB's main appeal was "hey come level RDM and SAM" instead of actual content. Those of us that could give a shit have been running 3 dungeons and 2 primals trying to stay motivated to play. Then Omega came out, and it was easier than Alex. Then Savage came out, and you can literally PUG to 4.

I'll go back when there's actually shit to do.

Doing quests and story missions are not inherently bad though.
It's the gatekeeping of fun content with horrible content.
The idea of "You have to prove your worth by doing all this shit nobody wants to do so you can experience the actual game people have fun with" isn't viable in todays market unless you're someone with an insane amount of time to waste for one reason or another.
The worst part is that the end game content and gear grind is really well made for people that don't have a lot of time to spend, but in order to get that content you have to prove you're a no-lifer unless you're okay with doing these quests for months until you reach relevant content.

I see this said a lot an it's just not true.
When this game first released everyone thought it was a pile of garbage and it tanked while still having the FF name attached to it.
I personally don't enjoy a lot of aspects of the game but this isn't a reason for the game's popularity.
The reason for the popularity is that it uses a tried and true formula that is incredibly familiar to people of the genre at this point. Then they streamline this formula to an intense degree and attempt to remove as much fat from the bones as possible to make it painless to get into in terms of information overload which is appealing to people.

I only played the open beta or whatever a few years back.

The fetch quests, combined with the animals just idling in the fields, combined with the boring event system, just all felt like shit to me.

They were all 100% last-gen MMO. Shit WoW had even stopped doing!

At the time, GW2 was new-ish and doing all these cool things like dynamic events, enemies that roamed around, dynamic combat with lots of dodging and cool ability combos. Playing FFXIV was like going back to the dark ages of MMOs.

But now WoW's pretty trash.
GW2 went to shit with the pre-HoT patches.
There doesn't seem to be any good MMO left on the planet.

In no version of reality are dynamic events, mixing and matching skill loadouts, weapon swapping, dodging, combo abilities, etc "braindead" compared to a WoW clone in which you tab-target rats in a field and mash 1111 to cast fireballs or shoot arrows at them.

GW2 had those world bosses even in the newbie zones.
GW2 had level scaling so even at max level you could quest wherever you wanted and still be challenged.
GW2 had those perk trees and so many gear options. You could make a DoT-focused Thief or a burst Thief or even a dodge-centric tank Thief.
You could make a melee ranger, a DoT ranger, a sniper, etc.
You could play a melee battlemage elementalist that summoned weapons, a support Ele, a generic nuker Ele, a melee DD Ele that was super mobile and tanky, etc.

Going from all of that shit to FFXIV with its FFXI-tier game design could not have felt good. I refuse to believe you even tried GW2, or spent more than an hour playing it. Maybe if you quit during the intro I could see you having these ideas, but if you couldn't tolerate GW2's intro, no way in hell could you tolerate FFXIV's fetch quests for hours at the start of the game.
