In two of the best fantasy series' I've read in the last decade (The First Law, The Powder Mage Trilogy) both authors agreed that their work dramatically improved when they removed the 'fantasy races' in exchange for actual unique cultural development with humans.

It depends on the game. In something like the Elder Scrolls series, it is boring to just pick a human when there's like three different types of humans. But in something like WoW where you have so many races that are weird and different, playing a human almost turns into the unique choice due to how much they're surrounded by stranger races. It becomes a novelty and more interesting to play a human when so many other people are running around as elves, orcs, dwarves, and other shit.

Besides, humans typically look the best in armor sets in WoW. I played a male troll for years as my main and goddamn is that suffering when it comes to how armor fits. Everything looks like a skin tight texture layered over their body. With humans it looks a little better because the textures aren't getting stretched too bad.

BECAUSE: Orcs look like shitty hunchbacks, Undead have stupid bones sticking through their armor, Blood Elves look nothing like their WC3 counterparts, Goblins are kind of decent but armor looks like garbage on all short races.
Tauren have terrible clipping issues and aren't as big as they should be.

Blood Elves are pretty much the emerging powerhouse nowadays.
They have mostly recovered from the third war. Not bearing the brunt of damage for multiple expansions goes a long way.
The Reliquary, though newly established, already is giving the Explorers' League a run for its money. The improved golems and anima magic they recovered from ToT is a great boon. Not only can it stand pound for pound to any alliance tech, but it's also a failsafe if Sylvanas tries anything funny.

The only way to improve it is to give it crisper textures, higher poly count, and absolutely keeping the same general design. They MOSTLY did good with the Tomb sets, which were pretty good upgrades from Tier 6 designs excluding the obviously bad ones like Demon Hunter, Monk, and Death Knight, who didn't have T6. Something like how the Warrior (except keep the glowing eyes) and Hunter sets were would be perfect.
