I started a little before the japanese update. Spent a lot of time on Balloon race in the beginning, then vs saxton hale and now I just occasionally join payload servers. There's a lot of obnoxious shit these days but as long as you just stick to the same good pub servers it's not as bad as people say it is.

Yep, definitely TF2. Before they added any of the RPG elements like unlockable weapons or hats. Team Fortress Classic was my favorite game as a kid and Team Fortress 2 actually did the game justice on release. Then they ruined it. It's not the same game that I bought.

In TF2's prime a default loadout was pretty well the best thing you could get. Every class update added weapons that were fun gimmicks for fucking one guy up really hard but worse overall.

2010-2011 Vindictus. It was an incredibly satisfying experience based entirely on player skill. Then they brought in a new game director, uncapped defense which let people survive without having to play well, introduced stimulants, made highly upgraded weapons give retarded amounts of damage, nerfed bosses, and just generally made a concerted effort to make the game easier for players. The Ignition update was the last straw for me, and I haven't played since.

This is the major downside of online games. Even a single unpleasant update can completely kill a game, and you will never, ever get to enjoy it again unless you're lucky enough to find a private server somewhere.
