Sonic 1 and 2 were necessary stepping stones, experiments and building blocks that had to be put in place so that 3&K, the best Sonic game ever created, could happen. CD on the other hand is a deviation and aberration that's only loved by mouthbreathing idiots who look at the game and somehow don't see shit smeared all over the screen.

Only Sonic 1 holds-up, as the biggest platformer (the strongest console genre of that time period) of the trilogy. The increased speed of Sonic 2 does nothing for this formula, as the 2D camera can't handle it well, and much faster action genres have improved upon this since. In the same way, the added exploration and features of Sonic 3 only feel like bloat to me after playing the classics of other genres where these are much better integrated.

Sonic 1 is also the nicest-looking for me since, again, it actually follows the strengths of that time period (the idealised cartoony avatar) whereas the sequels got progressively edgier and overly-detailed.
