That building is immensely oppressive.
If you passed it earlier, you would think to yourself "Better steer clear of that place, something's not right."
So when you find yourself inside of it, with no quick escape, and expect whatever is making the place so horrible to ambush you any second, a big, smiling non-human humanoid at the top of a stairwell will get you.
And after that first time, you learn to shun it as some sort of primal defense mechanism.
