Hey guys, so I want to play Dragon's Dogma - Dark Arisen but I'm not sure what vocation I'm going to pick.
I thought Sorcerer because the spells in this game are really cool, but it looks slow as fuck and I think I'd need knowledge about elemental weaknesses for every mob, it just doesn't look like a beginner-friendly class.
Maybe my pawn could be one, but I doubt the AI will do the job correctly (using lightning against a fire-weak mob, getting too close to the ennemy and getting killed in a few seconds,...).
What are your thoughts? Share your personnal experience.
My second pick is Fighter.
>>
>>386164260
If you like mobility and playing it safe - pick Strider, so you can later on switch to Magick Archer and cheese the fuck out of every second mob in BB (the expansion dungeon). The AI is actually really decent in picking what to use against whom and you can indirectly set their behaviours by talking to them at special chairs and tables around the world. Fighter is what you would expect - Kingdoms of Amalur + Shadow of Colossus.

DESU just look at the the advanced/hybrid vocations, pick one and choose a starter class closest to its general profile. You can also carry some passive bonuses over between certain classes.
>>
sorcs are good but absolutely suck ass to play, since 80% of the time is spent standing still and casting spells (aka doing nothing). give it to one of your pawns

if you want a magic class, go magic archer or mystic knight.

It's really easy to switch vocations anyway, the game is designed so you can try out a vocation and then switch if you don't like it.
>>
>>386164260

Biggest piece of advice is do not minmax your first time playing. In the vanilla game it was necessary to get the most out of some vocations. With the release of bitter black isle, BBI level 3 weapons, gear, and the correct passives will make up the bulk of your stats. Put it this way, with identical end game gear, the difference in a perfectly minmax character and a character with the worst stat allocation is only a ~8% difference in damage.

Just go in and enjoy yourself. Also, if you are on steam, you can make new steam accounts with gmail accounts and game share with yourself. Add your new account to your friends list and you can share your own pawns from your different accounts, so you can have multiple saves without having to mess around with your save file (which can corrupt it). Makes trying out new builds easy, and its a lot of fun to roll with a full party of your own geared and trained pawns.

Don't bother with blue classes OP, they are an absolute shitfest to use, easily one of the worst mage experiences i remember in arpgs. Use yellow classes instead, they highlight everything good about combat system of this game.
>>
>>386164260
Mage/Sorcerer is complete ass to play. Avoid it until you know what you're doing, but it's still gonna be really fucking boring.

Other than pretty much every class is viable.

If you still want to use magic somehow, you can go Magick Archer/Mystic Knight.

Also, here's a tip: In one of the main quests, your objective is to find a ring and turn it in. Instead, make a forgery of the ring and keep the original. It will cut down your casting time.
>>
Thank you for your answers, as I expected the pure magic classes are boring to play because of the slow casting time.
I want to avoid bow vocations since I've always sucked with them.
I think I'm gonna pick the Fighter and later on try the Magic Knight and Assassin, this way I can try my hand at both magic and bows.
>>
>rusted weapons, when upgraded to 3 stars, will inflict poison and torpor (slow) on most enemies (only 6 in the game are unaffected, mostly ghosts). this makes climbing some big enemies like cockatrice or drakes easy since they will move so slow they can't knock you off.
>gold weapons when upgraded to 3 stars or better will inflict silence. this will make some enemies, even spell casting bosses, unable to attack you.
>you can throw flasks of oil on to enemies, they'll take more fire damage and will be easier to burn, inflicting a fire DoT
>you can throw flasks of water on to enemies to drench them, they'll take more damage from cold and lightning
>their kind fears ice and fire both
>you can throw skulls at enemies to curse them
>you can throw rocks, skulls, and foreign knives at cyclops to break their armor
>attack a cyclops hand with the club will make them drop it
>climbing on a cyclops back and baiting them to trying to grab you will have them remove their helmet
>wolves hunt in packs
>you can grab on to a harpy (if you are light enough) and they can carry you around. some hidden items in the game can only be found this way.
>if you are small enough, you can go into goblins holes, a couple chests are only accessible this way.
>if you find a healing spring, you can bottle the water. when used it'll heal the whole party.
>all roads lead to gran soren
>after you defeat the hydra at the encampment, you can head to bitterblack isle by visiting the cassardis docks at night. when you get there, you can talk to Olra to switch to an advance vocation, much sooner than when you can normally do it in gran soren
>when askes to find Quina in the woods, this is one of the few time sensitive quests. if you don't do it before heading to the pawn guild in gran soren, you will lose her as a love interest, will never meet another character, get locked out of a portcrystal, and lose access to an entire area of the game

for what it's worth, multiple mages/sorcs can all intone the same spell at the same time, and it makes casting time dramatically faster. It's pretty fucking fun playing through DD with an all mage/sorc squad.

I fucking love fighter. It might start off a bit slow, but once you unlock some skills you'll be baller as fuck in no time. Shield cymbal attack does blunt damage which will break skeletons super quick. Sheltered spike is great for big enemies when they are knocked down, since it strikes so fast you can punish the weak spot for a few lifebars. Blink strike, broad cut, and legions bite/dragons maw are the best sword skills. Dragons maw does a fuck ton of damage and you have I-frames for the duration, so you can basically tank a giant enemies attack if you time it right, taking no damage, and counterattacking all in one move.
>>
>>386164260
Pawns are good at any Vocation as long as you give them the Skills that they actually exploit effectively. For example, a Warrior Pawn will never ever be able to land an Arc of Deliverance, but they will masterfully use Escape Slash to dodge most attacks.

Mage Pawns are pretty good with any spells, but they'll go full retard with their priorities if you put Anodyne on them (even if you don't have the Medicant or ), as they'll drop everything as soon as you get hurt and immediately try to heal even if they're in danger themselves.
Most Sorcerer spells aren't that good for Pawns as the cast time is so long that they'll rarely get anything off unless absolutely nothing is near them (they'll do their little hop to try and avoid enemies, interrupting their casting), unless you are a Sorcerer yourself and use the same spells, as they'll mirror and amplify your spell.

Strider/Ranger are the most powerful classes in the game, and Pawns with Reset, Helm Splitter, and Tenfold Flurry will shred enemies apart. You don't even need to put other skills on them. There is merit in leaving some skill slots empty on Pawns as they will cycle through all of the skills they have equipped. If all they have is Flurry, they will spam the fuck out of enemies.

It's unfortunate that the Fighter and Warrior Vocations suck both as a player and with Pawns as they are grossly underpowered due to their total lack of ranged ability. They're mostly good for maxing out the vocations so you can get their Augments and skills that can be used in Assassin/Mystic Knight. HOWEVER, tank/parry/taunt Fighter Pawns with Hindsight Slash, Perfect Defense, Shield Summons and Springboard are really useful to draw attention, parry everything like it was Street Fighter 3, and give you a boost.

Holy shit, it amazes me that there's still things I didn't know about. I've beat it like 4-5 times by now as well

Unfortunately nothing feels as good to play as the yellow classes because they're the only ones that get to be fast, double jump, and instant reset. Personally Strider and Ranger are my favorites. Strider for melee, Ranger for ranged.

This is wrong.

I mean, it happens, but it's not just that one. Just about every non-main quest has a "time limit" of sorts; basically they stop being available or are failed automatically if you progress with the story enough (different quests are limited to different parts of the game).

For instance, if you don't do Madeleine's escort quest at the very beginning, one quest featuring her gets locked out later on. Aelinore's questline is missable, Valmiro's, etc. The Gold Idol, which already has a weird way of obtaining, can be missed too if you make the wrong choices.

That said, the Trials and Tribulations quest has an actual limit of three in game days.

Valmiro and Quina's quest lines are the easiest to miss. Though it's mostly the former's because chances are you'll so busy around Gran Soren that you'll think twice about visiting Cassardis anytime soon. Quina's can be done, but unless you know the game locks you out of quests you'll sooner do the escort mission to Gran Soren first followed by the venture into Everfall only to find out it's too late.

So what's the best class to use before switching to Mystic Archer? Will I have a hard time pre-BBI if I don't minmax my vocation?
>>
What's the best class if I wanna go fast?
>>
>>386181384

No, you'll get most of your magick damage from your bows and the magick augments. Personally, I recommend starting as a strider and playing through the base game as one. You unlock the yellow attacks, augments, and skills which you can use as a MA, then you can get items in the post game to easily grind out mage and sorc for their augments with AFK farming of certain NPCs. Strider has balanced stat growth which you'll need because some enemies are still easier to defeat with daggers, and most importantly you'll get the best stamina growths. As a MA you'll be launching magick bow attacks almost constantly, so you need a lot of stamina to support that, or else you'll be chomping down mushrooms like crazy.

Cant comment about mage, however i played the fighter class and later role swapped to ranger.

You can easily beat the game as a fighter, however end game content like ur-dragon and bitterblack isle will be harder.

Mainly because of the weakspots not being in reach for the fighter class.

The good thing about this game is that its designed around people being allowed to swap vocation.

Basically just play whatever class you like and if you find it too boring just swap.

minmaxing doesnt mean shit you're only missing 200-300 dmg which is nothing in the grand scheme of things since you're just gonna use consumables that makes you do 4x damage anyway.

You shave off maybe like 3attacks if you minmax.
Just because of how fast they die.
