Also there's no reason to get a fat if you plan to pirate. PS2 digital compatibility is just as good on the slim. I've never run into issues running ps2 games and I have all the good ones on my HDD.

Fats are noisy as fuck. They run hot and consume 50% more electricity than the slims. They are more likely to break from the heat fucking up the solder balls. Never get a fat PS3 unless you plan to take really good care of it as in changing the thermal paste, cleaning out the dust, and have it placed in a room with A/C.

Just don't anon. Its not worth the hassle, get a slim model and ou will do just fine. Some games (Tekken Tag 2) are actually built with the slims slightly diffirent hardware in mind, so you may even find there are some games that don't work. Don't believe me? Google "tekken tag 2 FAT PS3"

Also it will no doubt die on you pretty fast by now.

Only from the PSN store, it won't accept PS2 discs. It will however, accept ALL PS1 discs just fine, unless you have the PAL version of Ape escape, that one won't work.

The best model to get is the PS3 Slim - not Super Slim if you're hacking - it can be downgraded and play PS1/PS2 games, and is reliable and quiet

The super slim is the best if you aren't hacking.

All PS3s can play PS1/PS2 games, but only the launch versions can play PS2 discs - so you can download PS2 games fine from the PSStore

All PS3s have a software emulator as evidenced by slim and super slims PS3s being able to play PS2 classics games from PSN.

If you have CFW (only for slim, super slims can't install CFW), you can use Cobra to inject any PS2 iso into the emulator. However results may carry. From my experience, Tales of Legendia is extremely buggy on it. But SSX Tricky runs perfectly (good game)

ps3 is so fuckin' slow. transferring and installing games sucks. fuck, digital anything on that thing sucks. the save system is also gay. the console is just gay. i don't even like thinking about the games i haven't finished, because i know when i drag that fat piece of shit out of the closet, i'll have to sit there and waste a day waiting for it to do anything.

As much as I like my PS3, this is true.
Even playing games on physical discs sucks because most games still require installation/patches which is always slow as fuck.
Because the PS3 loads data from blu-ray discs, loading screens in games are so bad, at least compared to Xbox 360.

All fat PS3s are ticking time bombs. It's only a matter of time before the thermal paste dries up and the system overheats itself causing YLOD. Sony used the cheapest paste to save production costs and didn't even do a good job of applying it, seriously. Planned obsolescence was Sonys endgame for the machine so they get you to buy a Slim.

Slim and Super Slims have a PS2 emulator in them, however you can only access it with CFW. You can't have CFW on Super Slim.
Compatibility varies between games unlike Fat which has PS2 guts inside it therefore perfect emulation.

I still have my launch PS3.

It got noisier after about a year, so I disassembled it, cleaned it, and applied better thermal paste to it (they use basic white shit tier paste).
I recommend doing this with a paste that is designed to cure and work better after drying.

They CAN break, and the reason is the same as the 360. Console gets hot, and the board flexes, then it cools down and the board contracts. This can weaken or break the solder balls on the GPU and CPU over time. Do NOT turn it off right away when you play games, put it back in the XMB and let it sit for 5 minutes to slowly cool down. Slower cooldown = less flexing.

The hard drive is just any standard 2.5" hard drive, and there is a little door on the left and a single phillips screw to remove it.

If you're on 3.55 or less firmware, YES. Pop in a USB stick with the software and follow the instructions.
If you're on higher, you need to do a hardware flash to downgrade it. On launch models this is MUCH harder because they used 2 NAND chips for the firmware, so you need to do the whole process TWICE, which means twice the chance for fuckups.

Non-launch fat models with NOR flash are much easier.

Any model can play PS1 or PS2 games as a software mod (PS2 Classics mode) once hacked.

PS3 fat can run ISOs from any backup manager that support it.

Words of warning:
PS3 super slim models CANNOT BE HACKED YET.
Only Fats and Slim1s (because firmware 3.55 wont run on SuperSlims)

If you DO hack your PS3, get a mod that will change the default fan profile, the factory fan profile is TERRIBLE and waits until 70C to ramp up. Set it to try and maintain 63-65C. This will be a little louder, but not much, and your PS3 will not have a flexing board problem.

Also, in PS2 and PS1 mode, the fan profiles DO NOT WORK, the PS3 defaults to 20% fan speed. This is fine for PS1, but on PS2 titles the system will exceed 78C.

Set the default fan speed in PS2 titles to 30-35%. It's a little loud, but worth it.
