It's not irrational, he's a total asshole. He does mean well though and he has the potential to be sweet but he's way too hard on her too. The thing is she also doesn't just want to accept a new father, it makes her furious that this man is there to replace her beloved dad. If the parents were separated by divorce or Chloe wasn't so close and fond of her dad and David was not so hard on her, it's very likely that Chloe would have been totally chill with him.

Compare Chloe with the alternate timeline version of herself, you can see that she was always great with her family, the crash happens a year or so prior to the events in the game and in all those years she never becomes a "degenerate". It's just her pain and how she deals with it. There's also no doubt that Chloe would have fixed herself up, this was evident during the timeline where Max ended up winning the contest in her text messages.

Max alsooves her *romantically* whatever you do (even if you try to imply that you didn't side with her) as the story developed,Chloe loves her too. That's why she was stucking between those endings choices and she was sacrificing her unwillingly even if you chose that ending.

Idk if you even played the game but, she saved Chloe in bathroom by not recognizing her in there, and after those events she was still desperately doing everything to bring her back regardless of what's happenning arcadia bay. She wasn't giving a single fuck about the storm, hell until the end she was still saying how was Chloe was important thing to her,she's not gonna do it,she doesn't want to make that (choosing bay) decision.

I know she saved Chloe without even knowing it was her the first time, BUT she still let her die the first before saving her the thous making sealing Chloe's fate, she was destined to die.
I know Max is supposed to "love" her, but the game makes it look like she's doing everything out of guilt after ditching her after her dad died because every time you disagree with Chloe she brings up Max "leaving her".
