Don't be mislead by Platinum's involvement, this game is a JRPG.
You don't need to play in the first one though you will lose some throwbacks and fanservice. At the very least watch analysis of the first game's story from superbunnyhop if you're sure that you will never play it.

Play Nier before Nier automata. Nier automata has some great moments in it that are lost on people that never played Nier. in fact there are major parts of the game that will just fly over your head if you never played Nier. on top of that Nier is very much worth experincing it has a lot going for it. but the gameplay is kind of bland. so it's best to play it now before automata or you'll have a hard time going back.
