I actually played one of the games to experiment, It was surprisingly fun, I just wish the character designs did a better job showing what the characters were supposed to represent, the canon lore and characterization are pretty awesome but it takes effort to take things seriously when everything is a little girl with a silly hat

If you're still open to trying it, read Forbidden Scrollery. It's the more serious of the newer manga and really gives you some perspective to Gensokyo and the relationship between humans and youkai. It's not as silly as the games, and the art is much easier to swallow.
