Stick with knowing just the basics
you need a pair of the same, then quads, triplets or sequences of 3 (1-2-3, 4-5-6, etc).
If you need some special hand for some objective, look it up and keep restarting a match until you have something close to it.

Riichi mahjong is a ruleset that makes the game more interesting and tactical. It's inherently better.

Every other major variation is lacking the yaku minimum. Therefore the most effective way to play is to take every tile you can form others, open your hand, and be the first to complete so you can get points and no one else can. turns the game into attrition instead of having to make better decisions.

Personally I'm not a fan of it because it means now there's a whole other pile of things you have to worry about. Yeah, the pieces in Shogi are more geared towards protecting the King so they can't just stick something near it for a checkmate, but it's just an added layer of stress. I can't even play normal chess and win matches so Shogi is like taking chess and putting me up against a grandmaster.

That's not actually true. Only Old Style Hong Kong foregoes the minimum. Even Chinese Classical, the one known for the Chicken Hand, usually has a point minimum making the chicken hand illegal 90% of the time.

I don't know what to say. Don't get captured? I don't play chess at all because I don't never studied chess theory and haven't played since highschool. I'm not going to play shogi either for the same reasons.

I'm just saying that from a mechanics standpoint I think it makes it more interesting than the typical endgame Chess has between amateurs which is shit like the game being drawn out with only 5 pieces on the board.
