So I'm about half an hour into Earthbound, just walking around the town with these punks in it.

Is there a specific point in the game in which things pick up a bit and get really good? Not too wowed by the intro of it.
>>
>>386097242
If you're still not enjoying it by the time you get to Twoson it might not be the game for you.
>>
>>386097242
Earthbound is all about the atmosphere. I would say the game gets better past that part though.
>>
>>386097365
Okay cool. I don't hate it right now or anything, it just feels sort of simple and not as charming as I expected. I'll press on though.

Should I really focus much on the actual rpg elements, or is it pretty simple as long as you're not an idiot? I'm a jrpg veteran, just wondering if there are any hidden mechanics or difficulty spikes later on.
>>
>>386097702
It's a very basic rpg and the deepest it gets is killing enemies or healing before your meter reaches 0. It never gets impressively difficult but it's not too easy.
>>
Mother 1 Magicant > Mother 2 Magicant
I miss it lads. I should give M1 another replay.
>>
>>386097702
The only remotely difficult thing is the first sanctuary guardian if you're under leveled and maybe the part near the end when you don't have the rest of your party with you.

Few questions to some anons here.

>The title "Mother" do you feel referred more to Mother Earth, or the player's mother in game? Do you feel that it's a theme that's more apparent in either game, as in Mother 1 is more about Earth itself, or Mother 2/3 is more about the relationship/bond formed with one's mother?

>Fan games aside, if Mother 4 were to come out with a resurrected Itoi, what do you feel the main themes would be in regards to the game?

IMO I feel Mother Earth is more a theme in Mother 3 versus a relationship one has with their mother.

If a legitimate mother 4 came out with those conditions I think the main theme would be about how on a large scale level we are becoming more desensitized to violence, how violence is becoming a more prevalent thing, as well as how individuals are caring less, and less about other people.

Mother 1 and 2 are both about saving the earth while the protagonists mother is just a steak dispenser. Mother 3 is the only game where the mother plays a significant role.

I couldn't make a guess at what a real 4th game would be about if it ever got made but you'd probably still play as a kid with a striped shirt.
>>
>>386099634
Do you feel the homesick mechanic in Earthbound was poorly designed? It always seemed weird to me that Paula, Jeff, or Poo never had to call their respective family, or equivalent.

I could see Jeff getting away with it because his father had been away for up to 10 years. But, even tony calls a few times throughout the game, showing that at least on his end that they had a good friendship. It's also interesting that the character that seemingly has the most Guts, is the only one who misses his mother so to speak.
>>
>>386099964
Its an issue of all the characters being poorly fleshed out and there being almost no interaction between party members. This doesn't ruin the game but it certainly would have helped had the main cast been a bit more developed.
>>
I feel like grinding killed the game for me. I played EarthBound and after a while you really get into the atmosphere and story, seeing new enemies is cool too but having to grind just monotonises it
>>
Duncan's Factory is plain bullshit. You pretty much have to grind some when Lloyd and Ana join. That's it, and the former is alleviated with a map and the latter didn't bother me.
>>
>>386100657
Dragon Quest style party chat would be so fucking good in Earthbound
I wonder if someone could patch something like that in? Maybe not the actual dialogue just yet, but some coding that would allow that to happen.
>>
>>386097702
are you speeding through it or taking your time?

Earthbound's charm comes from the characters and the settings. The NPCs, and the spritework. The Story is simple. The Battles are simple.

if you're going in wanting gameplay first, you're gonna have a bad time

I believe that the title "Mother" refers to the importance motherhood plays in childhood. Earth Bound Zero's ending has an enraged Giygas ready to conquer Earth, but Ninten and the Eight Melodies bring back memories of Giygas's mother (Ninten's great-grandmother), and allow him to be soothed and withdraw his invasion. EarthBound has Ness face off against a corrupted Giygas, and only "muh power of friendship" can defeat him. It's the weakest ending of the three, but it still shows how Ness's party must fall back on their family and friends to defeat evil. In Mother 3, Hinawa's death causes a rift in Lucas' family, tragically separating Lucas and Claus, and leaving both of the children to be easily manipulated. Thankfully, Flint finds Lucas and raises him to be a good child, but he still feels lost without a mother (Chapter 6). Claus, on the other hand, becomes corrupted to a tragic end.

I'd say Mother 1 has a really well-written story, but the gameplay is just too dated and muddles down the experience, even with Easy Ring, the Annaiversary Patch, and other fixes. Mother 2's story has a lot of weakness and flat writing, but the gameplay is more enjoyable. Mother 3 finds the balance, and combines an amazing story and atomosphere with gameplay that's actually fast and interesting.

I feel it refers to the earth. I remember Itoi has said some inspirations were the John Lenon song of the same name and that he felt the game can act as a "mother" to other games.

I don't want a official Mother 4 at all. The series had a proper ending, let it rest. A new game by itoi would be great though.
>>386102880
They were just there, we just never knew of them in M1 or M2.

Haven't finished Earthbound, but Mother 1 dealt more with a literal mother I thought. Giygas came to Earth in search of the human woman that raised him as her own. Not realizing she was dead.

I guess I'm the only one who liked Earthbound's gameplay

It's simple in a way that reminds one why and how turn-based can still be satisfying without a whole lot of fancy gimmicks and animations.
Limited inventory and PP recovery force you to be very strategic and efficient with your turns, items and PSI usage.
Learning enemy behaviors and attributes plays a key role. Dungeons become endurance tests of how well you can manage your resources.

The writing is really offbeat and funny.
Fighting hostile punks around town and raiding the arcade to find their leader is really unusual for an RPG.
The modern suburban setting is a really nice change of pace from generic high fantasy crap.

I would say Earthbound more than anything is a game of subverting your expectations.
A lot of moments just set up to fuck with you and it's hilarious.
>>
>>386110030
Play DQ if you haven't, basically the same and served as the main inspiration gameplay wise for the series.
