I don't know
Got into JRPGs recently. Looking for some good ones to play on mah PSP.
Thinking about going through the first FF1, never finished a Final Fantasy game before, but the first few hours of a couple of them.
I played through DQ1 a couple days ago through an emulator just for the hell of it, so I don't think FF1 will be that hard to endure. Having multiple combatants on the field already sounds like a huge improvement over DQ1's 1v1 fights.
>>386088768
>unironic shilling of your thread (>>386089095) because an OP made you mad
Literally go fuck yourself, maybe you'll feel better if you haven't already done so 3x today
>>386089391
Is it hacked? Psp is a god tier mobile emulation device. I have played a ton of nes, snes, genesis, ps1, and gba jrpgs on mine. If you haven't it is piss easy to do.
>>386089640
My first time doing it actually. I'm just sick of stupid OPs that make discussion shitty.
I think I can make a strong argument that Breath of Fire 3 has one of the most tightly written narratives in all of gaming.
Also I think it was ahead of it's time in a lot of things, like U.I. design and speed of the battles. Also the dragon gene system was one of the coolest things I've ever seen and I have no idea why it's never been copied in other games.
>>386089653
It is, I'm actually planning on playing FF1 on it. I just don't know which version to go with: NES original, PS1's FF Origins, GBA's Dawn of Souls or the PSP's own remake.
Also any recommendations are welcome, I also have a DS, PS3, and a Wii.
Yes I am stuck in 2006 because I'm a PCfag.
>>386090031
I can make the argument that Breath of Fire IV is a better game in every way.
>>386090118
Play the ps1 version, that is the best version while not changing the core mechanics.
I actually started FFI awhile back but dropped it, got too dull. You should try it but that was my thoughts.
>>386089391
It actually just makes the game slower. Also, I would instead recommend playing as far as you can into DQ2 and picking up DQ3. You'll appreciate FF1 more as it's a direct response to DQ2 and DQ3 is just really good.I hope you didn't play the NES version of DQ1, it has way more grinding than the other versions and off-tempo music.
>>386090468
Personal opinion on FF1
Start to Boat: Perfect pacing. Then there's a HUGE fucking grind wall and the game is a pain in the ass until Lich, at which point it picks back up and is pretty solid until the end.
>>386090281
But you would be wrong.
>>386090118
Sorry, meant to give some suggestions.
Dragon Quest III-V, VII-XI if you know Japanese
MOTHER/Earthbound series (plays similar to DQ but has a more modern day sci fi setting)
Chrono Trigger (just solid overall and short)
Shin Megami Tensei series (post apocalyptic series about recruiting demons)
Metal Max series (also post apocalyptic but with a humorous tone, you're a bounty hunter and can customize your collection of tanks.)
Breath of Fire III and IV (beautiful art an solid games, IV is one of my favorite jrpgs)
>>386090479
Kek, I did play the NES version. It was pretty stressful, but I played it while doing some other shit, almost on auto-pilot.
>>386091021
Thanks.
Are the DS versions of DQ solid ports?
>>386091079
Almost all the games have remakes, maybe look into those. Sadly some of the games have bad English translations so playing older versions is actually better.
>>386090118
The NES version is broken, mostly in your favor. It's good for context and the original renditions of its OST.
PS1 fixes everything, gives it a facelift, and is the version you'd replay if you ever went back.
GBA is just PS1 but casualized and with bonus content.
PSP is GBA's content plus more. It's ugly and easy, but if you wanna check out all the dumb shit they added play this instead of GBA.
2 is best on PSP, hands down. 3 is good on either NES or PSP (JP DS upgrade, has English option). Best version of 4 is DS, but the only good version that's accurate to the original is the European GBA release. SNES was butchered, its fan translations are terrible, PSP has clashing sprites and the shitty After Years spinoff, and the US GBA version is glitched.
5 is best on GBA, 6 is best on SNES.
>>386091292
Damn, thanks a lot.
Can the PSP SNES emulator handle FF6? I know it shits itself pretty hard with a lot of games.
>>386091185
IV got neutered and has a bad localization, but it's the best you have available to you.
V and VI are fine and only whiners bitch about those two. VII 3DS is also a huge upgrade over the PS1 version aside from the removal of the opening puzzle.

I have to say no unless you already own them.
DQIV has a god awful translation, pic related, and is pretty hard to play because of this. I recommend eith trying the nes version (surprising more accurate but still a bit censored) or this fan hack maybe. It sadly was never more then a beta so maybe not.
http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=14879.0
DQV is a bit better but not much. I genuinely like the sfc/snes version best. I have played it via psp and it played great. These is a ps2 version with a fan translation as well. It has a orchestrated soundtrack but I think it looks kind of ugly honestly, up to you but I say either snes or ps2.
VI is a difficult case, honestly with this one either is fine as both have flaws. I believe the snes fantranslation has some missing lines and the ds remake, again, has a kind of shitty translation. VI is one of the worst DQ games though so maybe play this one later on.
>>386091515
I haven't tried it but with a jrpg i don't think it matters much. If anything play the gba version with the restoration patch if the snes version is shitty.
>>386090118
played FF1 on psp via gba Dawn of Souls
it was pretty good and you didn't need to grind at all, even occationally save scummed to get less encounters too
The best show ever.
>>386091961
Gba is the piss easy version, some hate it for this reason. The difficulty was greatly reduced there. Maybe good for a beginner though.
>>386091439
Iunno.
For further clarification, 4DS is a big overhaul. While it's essentially a remake the execution is very different from the original. It overhauls the story by adding necessary context and interactions, jacks the difficulty from cakewalk to ballcrusher, adds a cool customization system, and several successive New Game +s are available to thoroughly shatter your anus. It's so inherently different that you can't play just that version, it's an entirely different (much better) game.
>>386092032
what show is this?
>>386092342
Boku no Pico.
>>386092342
The Hero Yoshihiko and the Demon King's Castle
Show that is a parody of jrpgs.
>>386092085
difficulty in FF games = more grinding for bigger numbers
if you want difficulty in a turn based game you shouldnt try to find it in fucking early final fantasy of all things
>>386091795
V's translation is fine, you bum.
There's maybe two things that are bad in the whole thing (Like Dr. Agon).

>>386092573
FF1 is pretty much the exception. That holds true to 2 through...shit, the whole series? But in 1's case the game is well balanced outside of the grind wall before Astros. Being able to spam spells just completely removes any and all strategy from it.
>>386092592
Eh, things like Ludman being a generic Italian streotype whose every line is about pasta or pizza is shitty. I just prefer the snes version.

>>386088768
man why did season 2 have to be so shit
>>386093046
Eh, fair enough. Don't think I hate them for "muh censorship" though, I do like VII on the 3ds. It had flaws but I overall found it better then the ds games.
>>386092873
>fav: SMT, main series
Nice, which is your favorite? SJ for me.
>>386093184
Yeah, I'd say that's the best one yet. They get that people dont want the stuff too overbearing. It just annoys me that people get upset over stupid shit like Drakmage becoming Dracolyte.
>>386093291
Not him but what are your thoughts on the remake? I have played SH and nocturne, playing IV as we speak, and I was thinking of looking into SJ but I'm not sure if I should wait or just play the ds version.
Phantasy Star 1 and 4 are fucking rad and nobody loves them.
>>386088768
Why do Japanese RPGs steal everything from European culture anyway? Why aren't there JRPGs full of shoguns and samurais and shit?
>>386093479
Typically when the genesis comes up those or lunar are the immediate suggestions.
>>386093468
I am... cautiously optimistic, but every piece of information that gets shown gives me less and less hope. The new art severely clashes with the atmosphere and tone of SJ. The voices are really bad except for Arthur. The only thing I was really happy to see they didn't fuck with is the music. I suggest playing the original, just so you can experience it as it is meant to be. That being said, I'll still be buying a copy because SJ is my favorite.
>>386093581
Shame that 2 is merciless and mostly devoid of plot while 3 is jank as fuck.
>>386093572
But they are. Most take elements from anime and film. Early jrpgs were basically virtual DnD and later ones are apocalyptic or sci fi fantasy.
>>386093572
Why are all american games based on polytheistic religions. Why don't they have revolutionary soldiers and george washington and shit.

I see. I am kind of annoyed by the inclusion of Alex as it looks like she kind of just is there as waifu bait and that put me off a bit. The new art is inferior in my opinion but not awful like radiant historia which looks like shit now. Thanks for your input, I think I'll look into them more and just enjoy the other games for now.
>>386094232
From a gameplay perspective, it also seems like they're going to modernize it a bit in terms of fusion and shit. I'm glad they kept demon co-op, but the ability to inherit whatever skills you want in a game like strange journey just doesn't feel right.
>>386093572
nigga like half their shit is journey to the west ripoffs
>>386093087
I've already played pretty much every PS2 and PS1 JRPG I've been really interested in. I was more in the mood for something newer and PC is untapped for me still
>>386094536
Played any PSP stuff then?
>>386093291
Sadly nocturne, cause I never got around to buying a 2ds. I have the emulator now, I should get around to the other ones.SMT 1 is great, 2 really screwed up the magettite system or whatever, I remember grinding bodyconians constantly.
Guys, is it me or are mods on a rampage tonight?
>>386091795
DQ IV's translation is great. Only autistic weeb who say "it wasn't in the japanese version, so it's bad" complain about the accents and dialects. To me, it made the text much more enjoyable to read.
>>386094730
Not really honestly. Persona 3 Portable is about it
>>386095641
You could try 7thdragon2020,Growlanser, Yggdra Union, Phantasy star portable, Wild ARMS XF, Ogre battle
>>386093572
Eh, it's a mix. JRPGs like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc are composed of elements that are like a quarter Japanese, a quarter Chinese, a quarter English, and a quarter other parts of Europe.
Then the waifu shit ones like Neptuna are just a compilation of anime horseshit.
>>386096040

Dunno, but I'll say Yukari because she's best girl in Persona 3 and that's what I'm playing right now.
Truth be told, I haven't finished a lot of JRPGs. I have a lot, but I can hardly ever see them through to the end. I often end up getting distracted by some other games and after a couple months of not playing them, I'm just like, "Well, that playthrough is no longer valid, guess I'll have to start a new one."
